Brecken Basket – Crochet Pattern

Hi! I’m Ali, the crochet designer behind The Turtle Trunk! I’m so excited to share a new pattern with you all today!

The Brecken Basket is a beginner friendly, mid sized crochet basket that can be used to hold so many things! It can store your yarn, knick-knacks, or you can even use it as a plant pot cover! This basket measures approximately 10” x 10” and features 2 side handles and contrasting stripes. It’s the perfect size to sit on a shelf or table and can be made in any color combination to complement your home.

The Brecken Basket uses two strands of bulky (5) weight yarn held together, to make a sturdy basket that won’t flop over. If you’re unable to find a bulky weight yarn you can substitute with one strand of super bulky (6) weight yarn, but note this may affect the sturdiness and size of the basket.

The instructions show you how to make a striped basket using three colors. I used Lion Brand Yarn Hue + Me in the colors Rice, Werewolf, and Saffron. Feel free to use as many or few colors as you’d like!

Finished Size: 10” x 10”

Difficulty: Easy

Supplies:

• 2 strands of Bulky (5) Weight Yarn held together
  (I used Lion Brand Hue + Me)
  Color A – White (Salt) approx. 6.3 oz / 196 yards
  Color B – Black (Werewolf) approx. 2.5 oz / 78 yards
  Color C – Orange (Saffron) approx. 3.7 oz / 116 yards
• Amour Crochet Hook L (8.00 mm) – Art. No 1055/L
• Yarn Needle
• Scissors

 

Abbreviations (US Terms):
ST(s) – Stitch(es)
SL ST – Slip Stitch
SK – Skip
CH – Chain
HDC – Half Double Crochet

Gauge: 7 STs x 6 Rows = 4” x 4” in HDC
Adjust hook size up or down to meet gauge

Before you start:
? This pattern is worked in the round. At the end of each round, join with a slip stitch to the top of the first stitch from the previous round then chain 1. Work your first stitch into the same stitch as the chain.
? Beginning chains do not count as stitches throughout the whole pattern.
? The number in parenthesis at the end of each round represents the total number of stitches to be worked in each round.
? Stitches between ** are to be repeated until the end of the round or until otherwise stated.
? After changing colors, you can leave the previous color attached until there are no more color changes. When you need to pick up that color again, just “float” the yarn up.

3^rd loop only

A half double crochet stitch has 3 loops: 2 at the top of the stitch and 1 on the back/front. When stated, we will work a half double crochet but only in the 3^rd loop on the back of the stitch we’re working into. This will create a ribbing around the bottom of the basket, which will give our basket a nice flat bottom and sides that work straight up.  On the last round we will also slip stitch in the 3^rd loop only to finish off our basket with a ribbed edge.

Changing Colors

On the last stitch of the round before a color change, start the last stitch as normal, on the last pull through, drop your current color and pull through with the new color. Continue with the new color.

Magic Circle, CH 1

Round 1: HDC x8 inside the circle. Join & CH 1. (8)

Round 2: 2 HDC in each ST around. Join & CH 1. (16)

Round 3: *HDC in next ST, 2 HDC in the next*. Join & CH 1. (24)

Round 4: *HDC in next 2 STs, 2 HDC in the next*. Join & CH 1. (32)

Round 5: *HDC in next 3 STs, 2 HDC in the next*. Join & CH 1. (40)

Round 6: *HDC in next 4 STs, 2 HDC in the next*. Join & CH 1. (48)

Round 7: *HDC in next 5 STs, 2 HDC in the next*. Join & CH 1. (56)

The base should be approximately 10” wide.

Round 8: HDC in 3^rd loop only in each ST around. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 9: HDC in each ST around. Change to Color B. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 10: HDC in each ST around. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 11: HDC in each ST around. Change to Color A. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 12: HDC in each ST around. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 13: HDC in each ST around. Change to Color B. Join & CH 1. (56)

Rounds 14-17: Repeat Rounds 10-13. At the end of Round 17 change to Color C.

Rounds 18 -19: HDC in each ST around. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 20: HDC in next 11 STs, loosely CH 7, SK 7, HDC in next 21 STs, loosely CH 7, SK 7, HDC in next 10 STs. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 21: HDC in next 11 STs, HDC x7 across the CH, HDC in next 21 STs, HDC x7 across the CH, HDC in next 10 STs. Join & CH 1. (56)

Round 22: Loosely SL ST in the 3^rd loop only in each ST around. Join & tie off yarn. (56)
