Friendship Belt *crochet pattern*

Hello friends – Elisa from @stringsandcuddles here! 🙂 Are you looking for something easy and quick to make that will grab people’s attention? You’ll find that the Friendship Belt pattern is the perfect fit for you, so look no further. The pattern is easy to follow and comprehend. A few simple crochet stitches can be combined quickly to create this gorgeous accessory. Wearing a belt is a very practical way to add a little something extra to your outfit. Friendship Belts and other crochet belts are versatile and look great with more than just jeans and pants.

 

NOTES:

• This pattern is worked flat, in the rounds.
• Since this is a made-to-measure pattern, gauge is not so take your measurement before beginning. Determine whether you want your belt to sit just above your hipbones or on your waist. It is up to you, which option you choose.
• * * repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed or repeat at specified locations.
• ( ) work instructions within parentheses as many times as directed or work a group of stitches all in the same stitch or space.
• I recommend using stitch markers to mark specified stitches. Remember to move the stitch marker as you progress.
• It is entirely up to you how long your belt strings are. To lengthen or shorten the strings, simply add or subtract the specified number of chains.
• Gauge: 4.5 chains of circle-clusters = 4 inches (see Round 1)
• Skill level: Beginner Friendly – Intermediate
• Finished measurement:  32 (length) X 1.5 (width) inches (with 36 clusters excluding the strings)

MATERIALS:

• Amour Crochet Hook (4.5 mm)
• Patchwork Mini Scissors
• Clover Jumbo Darning Needle
• Tape Measure
• Quick Locking Stitch Markers
• Worsted Weight (#4) Cotton Yarn
  • approximately 75 yards

ABBREVIATIONS:

• ch(s): Chain(s)
• DC: Double Crochet
• PM: Place Marker
• prev: Previous
• rep: Repeat
• SC: Single Crochet
• sk: Skip
• slst(s): Slip Stitch(es)
• sp(s): Space(s)
• st(s): Stitch(es)

SPECIAL STITCHES:

• DC-CL (2 double crochet cluster): Yarn over, insert hook in a st/sp, yarn over, pull through a st, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, insert hook in the same st/sp, yarn over, pull through a st, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

 

PATTERN:

• Note: For your reference, my belt sample has 36 clusters.
  • Round 1: (a) *Ch 4, DC-CL in the 4^th ch from the hook*, PM into the very 1^st ch of the first ch 4. Rep from * to * until the length of your desired measurement (unstretched). Make sure you have an even number of clusters.  Once you obtained your desired measurement, continue working on the opposite side of each cluster (b). By doing this, you are making chains of circle-clusters.
• Note: If you feel that your belt will stretch out too much, you might want to shorten your desired measurement by one or two inches.
  • (b): *Ch 4, DC-CL in the 4^th ch from the hook, slst into the opposite cluster-base*, PM into the very 1^st ch of the turning ch 4. Rep from * to * across.

• • Round 2: (a) Ch 1, slst in the cluster-base of the prev round, PM, ch 6 (count as 1 DC and ch 3), DC in the next cluster-base, *ch 3, DC in the next cluster-base*; Rep from * to * up to last cluster-base before the marked st, ch 6, slst in the marked st, PM, (b) Ch 6 (count as 1 DC and ch 3), DC in the next cluster-base; Rep (a) from * to * up to the last cluster-base before the marked st, ch 6, slst in the marked st.

• Note: For the next round, you can use a smaller hook if you are finding it difficult to crochet through the chains.
  • Round 3: (a) Ch 1, (slst, ch 1) in every ch and st to the marked st, PM in the very 1^st slst. Work the first string, ch 81, slst in the 2^nd ch from the hook and in each ch back to the base (marked st). (b) (slst, ch 1) in every ch and st to the next marked st (which is the very 1^st slst of this round). Work the second string as the first (a).

• Fasten off and weave in all ends. Blocking your belt can give you a more polished appearance. You’ve completed it! It’s time to wear and show off your handmade belt!
