Pocket Bookmark- Crochet Pattern

Hello! It’s Jennifer Ryan, the designer, and blogger behind Celtic Knot Crochet. I am happy to be sharing a crochet bookmark project here on the Clover blog!

I love to read and often will make notes in the books I’m reading which means having a pen handy is very helpful. That’s where this Pocket Bookmark comes in!

It holds a pen or pencil in its cute little pocket and also keeps your place in a book.  Now that school is starting for many folks, this would also be a great addition to a backpack to help a student you know be ready to take notes and learn!

Plus, I’ve created this project to be adjustable so it can work for a variety of book sizes using very basic craft supplies.

Let’s get started!

Skill Level: Easy

Supplies:

Size 3 yarn (or DK weight)  – 2 colors – 1 skein of each color is more than enough for one bookmark

3.75mm (F) Clover crochet hooks- Art No. 1044/F

Jumbo tapestry needle by Clover- Art No. 3113

5” of elastic (I used a matching hair elastic)

3 buttons (16mm)

Optional: Sew-on jewelry charm

Finished Measurements:  Main pocket section = 7 ¼” long x 2 1/4” wide

Each strap is about 5 ½” long before sewing to pocket section

Abbreviations:

YO (yarn over)

Hk (hook)

Lp (loop)

Ch (chain)

St (stitch)

Sp (space)

Sc (single crochet)

Sl st (slip stitch)

Special Stitches:

Back Bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Back Loop Only = Insert hook into the back loop of each stitch

Sc join (single crochet join) = With slip knot on hk, insert hk into st; YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through both lps on hk

Notes:

The project is worked in the round for the pocket and then worked in rows for the top of the pocket section

Then the straps, elastic, and buttons are sewn on

Instructions:

Special stitches are written in bold and italicized text and defined above

Pocket Section:

With main color ch 22

Row 1:  Working in the back bar of the chain, sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Do not turn. (21 sc)

Round 2:  Now working in rounds and working in the back loop only, sc in 1st sc of Row 1 and in each sc around forming a tube. (21 sc)

Continue working in a spiral until 21 rounds total are completed (or “pocket” measures approximately 4 ½” long)

Row 22:  Still working in the back loop only, sc in each of the next 4 sts; Turn. Leave remaining sts unworked.

Row 23:  Now working in both loops, ch 1; sc in 1st st and in each of the next 8 sts; Leave remaining sts unworked; Turn. (9 sc)

Row 24:  Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Rows 25 – 37: Repeat Round 24. Fasten off.  (This section of the project working in rows will measure

approximately 2 ½” above the pocket edge)

Edging:

With contrasting color Sc join in any st along the edge of pocket section; sc in each st around making sure to work (sc, ch 1, sc) in each corner; join with sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off.

Straps – Make 2:

With edging color ch 25

Row 1:  Working in the back bar of the chain, sc in 2nd ch and in each ch across. Turn. (24 sc)

Row 2:  Ch 1, sc in each st across. Turn.

Row 3:  Repeat Row 2. Fasten off with a long tail for assembly.

Assembly and Finishing:

Using the photo as a guide sew the ends of straps to center of the top and bottom of pocket section on the back

Thread elastic onto the end of one strap and fold over strap end to form a small loop – sew the loop in place

Sew buttons onto other strap end (so on the front when project laid flat)

Optional: Sew on a decorative charm to the front of the pocket

Other fun embellishment ideas:

  • Add an embroidered initial
  • Sew on a crocheted mini-heart or flower
  • Sew on a decorative patch
  • Sew on a decorative button

Tada! Your Pocket Bookmark is complete!

I hope you enjoyed making this project and using it while you read.
