Lilac Wall Hanging
Hi there, Erin from CraftsEverywhere here to show you how to make this adorable wall hanging! It’s a fun way to add a little texture and color to any room in your house.
This is a beginner pattern which you can modify for any yarn weight. As written, you’ll need a 9 mm M/N hook and 1 strand of super bulky weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick for mine). If you’d like an ad-free version with more photos, you can find that on Etsy or Ravelry. Let’s get started!
Skill Level
Beginner
Materials
- Amour Crochet Hook M/N (9mm) – Art. No 1056/MN
- Super Bulky weight yarn, approx. 125 yards
- Any yarn or weight will work with this pattern! Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick (WETQ) is shown in the sample but with some hook size and cast on amount adjustments, you can use any yarn/hook combo.
- Darning Needle Set – Art. No 3121
- Locking Stitch Markers – Art. No 353
- 2″ wood craft ring
- Hanger (I used a branch from my yard) and twine
Gauge
Gauge is not important for this project. As written, wall hanging measures approx. 13” wide and 16” in length without tassels or hanger. Adjust beginning chain amount to change width if desired to make bigger/smaller bag.
Terms
- St(s) – Stitch(es)
- St mk(s) – Stitch Marker(s)
- Ch – Chain
- Hdc – Half double crochet
- Tr – Treble/triple crochet
- Sl st – slip stitch
- RS – Right side
- WS – Wrong side
Notes
- Please read ALL notes before beginning.
- *Asterisks mark a repeated stitch pattern.*
- Ch doesn’t count as a stitch unless otherwise noted in the pattern.
- This pattern is very easy to adjust on both the length and width.
- Any yarn/hook adjustments will affect the size and yardage. Check your width after crocheting a few rows to see if you like the size!
- The wall hanging is worked in one piece with the ring added while you are crocheting. The fringe, large tassel and hanger are added after the main panel is complete.
- I made mine using three different colors but you can use as many (or few) colors as you want to make this your own! Make a rainbow or a solid, add different fringe styles, leave the wood ring out, etc. There are so many things you can do with this!
- If you want to add different knots or fringe than the ones I have added here, there are great weaving tutorials on YouTube.

Pattern
Row 1 – (RS) Ch26, hdc in the third ch from hook and across, ch2, turn (24).
Row 2 – (WS) *Hdc,* ch4, turn. Mark the ends of this row with st mks when complete for surface crocheting later.
Row 3 – Ch4 counts as first tr, *tr in each st across*, ch2, turn.
Row 4 – *Hdc x 11, with a wooden ring on the back of your work (the RS), hdc around the ring and into st 12. Repeat for st 13. Hdc to end, ch2, turn.
Row 5 – *Hdc,* ch2, turn. Mark the ends of this row with st mks when complete for surface crocheting later.
Row 6 – *Hdc.* Change colors after completing the row if desired, ch4, turn.
Rows 7-11 – Repeat rows 3-6 and then row 3. Change colors after row 11 if desired.
Rows 12-18 – Repeat rows 4-6 and then rows 3-5.
Border
When you reach the end of the final repeat, ch2. Turn the entire piece 90 degrees and hdc down the side, across the bottom and back up the opposite side, spacing your stitches evenly. On the corners, hdc in the last st on one side, ch2, then hdc in the same stitch on the next side. Join in the topmost right st, leaving a 5-6 foot tail to sew your hanger on.
Finishing
Sew in all ends on the back and block if desired.
Add surface crochet to the rows with stitch markers now if desired. Remove the st mks as you go.
