Selciato Cowl – Knit Pattern

Hello Makers! It’s Elise again, the maker and designer behind Frosia Knits. This week I am excited to bring to you a beginner cowl pattern that has a gorgeous texture that looks complex and advanced but uses only knit and purl!

The Selciato Cowl is knit in the round, bottom up. There is one size available in my pattern but it can be easily modified to your preferences using the instructions in the notes. It is a quick knit that makes a perfect gift for yourself or better yet, a loved one for the holidays.

The Selciato Cowl was inspired by the stones used to create the streets of Siena, Italy. Like many medial towns in Italy, Siena has a network of streets that are paved with stone. I walked down the Via Banchi di Sopra (Siena’s main thoroughfare) hundreds of times while living there, admiring the stones and just in awe of the work that went into creating the maze of streets. The selciato (paved way) stones of Siena are large and have a wonderful stacked, diagonal pattern that I tried to recreate in the stitches of this cowl. I hope you enjoy!

The stitch pattern is a 6 stitch repeat. If you need to increase the width of the cowl, do so increasing your number of cast on stitches in multiples of 6. The row pattern is a 12 round repeat, if you wish to increase or decrease the height of the cowl, repeat round 5-16 as desired and then continue to Round 40. (You can stop the pattern after row 8, 12, or 16 to continue on to round 40)
