Pom-Tassel Keyring

Hola! This is Paloma from Paloma Textiles. For this project I decided to combine 3 different techniques (pom-pom, tassel and knot making) to create a one of a kind accessory.

I combined bright colors inspired by my Peruvian roots with modern craft techniques. This is the perfect accessory to style up and bring color to your day to day.

Supplies:

Instructions:

Step 1: Make 2 Tassels

Set the Tassel Maker to the size of the tassel you want to create. For the look featured in this project you will want to set your Tassel Maker to the middle setting, which creates a tassel that measures about 3 1/8″ (8cm).

Place your yarn in the left gap (as pictured below) to hold the yarn in place while you wind.

Wind the thread as many times as necessary (about 30 times to achieve the look in this project). Place the end of the end of the thread in the right gap and trim it.

With the Tassel Maker facing up, tie two knots firmly around the tassel so they don’t come undone.

Hold the center. Insert the tip of the scissors in the groove and cut through both ends of the loops.

Grab another strand of yarn to the neck.

Wrap the strand around the head a few times before tying a knot.

Repeat the process once more for your second tassel!

Step 2: Make 1 Pom-Pom

Have fun and use any color combination you’d like!

Open two U-shaped arches together from one side of the Pom-Pom Maker. Wrap the yarn firmly around the arches from one end to the other.

The Pom-Pom Maker used in this project is the largest in the Pom-Pom Maker Set and it makes pom-poms that are roughly 3 3/8″ (85mm) wide.

Wind yarn or wool evenly so that the shape will conform to the arch, then close the arch and repeat for the other two arches. Close the arches.

Cut the yarn beginning at the gap between the arches with a sharp pair of scissors. Hold firmly while cutting so that the arches do not open.

Place a thread or yarn to tie pom-pom in place. Tie firmly and make a double knot. Loop through twice, tighten firmly and then make another loop to tighten and secure.

Gently open one arch at a time. Separate the Pom-Pom Maker from the center. Remove pom-pom and fluff to shape. Use scissors to cut loose ends and to shape the pom-pom.

Step 3: Attach Tassels and Pom-Poms

Cut one strand of about 10 inches from each skein of yarn. Braid these strands together. Use the braided strand to attach the tassels to the pom-pom using a darning needle.

Start by passing the darning needle through the bottom of one of the tassels and then through the pom-pom.

It might help to place something that will hold a piece of the braided thread on top of the pom-pom since, that is where you will place your keyring.

Then pass the same braided thread back through the second tassel and knot the braided thread in place through the bottom of the second tassel.

Finally, place your key ring in the strand of braided thread that remained on top of your pom-pom.

Now you’ve completed a Pom-Tassel Keyring! Use it to embellish a purse, a basket, a backpack or anything you’d like.

And remember…practice makes perfect! Once you have it down try using different threads and color combos!

You can easily customize this project by using a smaller/larger setting on the Tassel Maker, the large Tassel Maker by Clover can be adjusted to make 5 different sizes and the small Tassel Maker can be adjusted to make 3 different sizes.

You can also change the size of the pom-pom by switching to a smaller/larger Pom-Pom Maker.  depending on the look you’re going for. Clover carries 7 different sizes.

Another option, is to wind the yarn around the makers more or less times depending on how full you want your pom-poms and tassels.

As long as you have fun and make this project your own!

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial!
