Capy Claus: The Christmas Capybara!
This holiday season, add a little whimsy to your crochet projects with Capy Claus, an adorable capybara plushie sporting a festive Santa hat. Perfect as a gift or a cute holiday companion, this quick and fun pattern is sure to spread Christmas cheer. Let’s get stitching!
MATERIALS:
- 1 skein (7 oz) of light brown micro-polyester bulky yarn (size 5)
- I used Big Twist Baby Bear from Joanne Fabrics
- small amount of dark brown yarn for nose and ears
- small amount of black yarn for eyes and nose details
- small amount of worsted weight red and white bulky yarn for Santa hat
- Clover Amour Hook Size (7.00mm)
- Clover Amour Hook Size (5.00mm) (for red part of hat)
- Patchwork Scissors
- polyfil
- Clover Yarn Needle
- Clover Stitch Markers
NOTES:
If you are prompted to place a st marker, please keep in mind you must move the st marker at the end of every round.
INSTRUCTIONS:
BODY:
With light brown, make a magic circle and ch 1.
- Round 1: 8 sc in the magic circle. Do not join, instead place st marker at the end of the row and move onto the next row – moving the st marker up at the end of each new row. (8 sc)
- Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (16 sc)
- Round 3: *1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat around. (24 sc)
- Round 4: *1 sc in the first 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat around. (32 sc)
- Round 5: *1 sc in the first 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat around. (40 sc)
- Round 6: *1 sc in the first 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat around. (48 sc)
- Round 7: *1 sc in the first 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st*, repeat around. (56 sc)
- Round 8-15: 1 sc in each st around. (56 sc)
- Round 16: *1 sc in the first 5 sts, sc dec*, repeat around. (48 sc)
- Round 17: 1 sc in each st around. (48 sc)
- Round 18: *1 sc in the first 4 sts, sc dec*, repeat around. (40 sc)
- Round 19-26: 1 sc in each st around. (40 sc)
- Row 27: 1 sc in the next 28 sts. Ch 1, turn. (28 sc)
- Row 28-29: 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (28 sc)
- Row 30: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec. Ch 1, turn. (23 sc)
- Row 31: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 6 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec. Ch 1, turn. (19 sc)
- Row 32: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec. Ch 1, turn. (15 sc)
- Row 33: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc dc, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc dec. Ch 1, turn. (11 sc)
- Row 34: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 2 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc dec. Ch 1, turn. (8 sc)
- Row 35: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc dec. Ch 1, turn. (5 sc)
- Row 36: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc dec. Ch 1 turn. (3 sc)
- Row 37: Sc3tog. Place st marker. Do not finish off.
Now you are going to work on the nose. You should have an opening and you are going to work in the round.
Put some polyfil in the bottom and start filling halfway.
- Round 38: Work 31 sc evenly around the entire opening back around to where you have your stitch marker. (31 sc)
- Round 39-40: 1 sc in each st around. (31 sc)
- Round 41: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 5 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 6 sts, 1 sc dec. (26 sc)
- Round 42: 1 sc in each st around. (26 sc)
- Round 43: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec. (22 sc)
Finish off light brown.
Attach dark brown yarn.
- Round 44: 1 sc in each st around. (22 sc)
- Round 45: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 4 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 2 sts. (18 sc)
Add more polyfil.
- Round 46: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next two sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 2 sts, sc dec, 1 sc in the next 2 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 2 sts, 1 sc dec. (13 sc)
- Round 47: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next st, 1 sc dec, 1 sc dec. (8 sc)
Finish filling with polyfil.
- Round 48: Sc dec in remaining sts. Finish off and weave in ends using yarn needle.
EARS (make 2):
With dark brown, ch 6.
- Row 1: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 hdc, 1 tr, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Ch 1 turn.
- Row 2: 1 sc, 1 hdc, 1 tr, 1 hdc, 1 sc. Finish off. Sew in place.
ARMS (make 2):
With light brown, make a magic circle and ch 1.
- Round 1: 4 sc in the magic circle (place st marker, pull tight to close). (4 sc)
- Round 2: 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st, 1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st. (6 sc)
- Round 3-6: 1 sc in each st around. (6 sc)
Finish off, stuff with a small amount of polyfill and then sew in place.
LEGS (make 2):
With light brown, make a magic circle and ch 1.
- Round 1: 6 sc in the magic circle (place st marker, pull tight to close). (6 sc)
- Round 2: 2 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
- Round 3: 1 sc in the back loop only of each st around. (12 sc)
- Round 4: 1 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
- Round 5: 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc dec, 1 sc in the next 3 sts, 1 sc dec. (9 sc)
- Round 6: 1 sc in each st around. (9 sc)
- Round 7: 2 sc in each st around. (18 sc)
- Round 8: 1 sc in each st around. (18 sc)
Finish off. Stuff the bottom of the foot with polyfil and then fold the top in half and sew together, then sew onto the body.
With black yarn, put in eyes and nose.
SANTA HAT:
With red yarn, ch 2.
- Round 1: 6 sc in the first ch. Place st marker. (6 sc)
- Round 2: 1 sc in each st around. (6 sc)
- Round 3: *1 sc in the first st, 2 sc in the next st,* repeat around. (9 sc)
- Round 4: 1 sc in each st around. (9 sc)
- Round 5: *1 sc in the first 2 sts, 2 sc in the next st,* repeat around. (12 sc)
- Round 6: 1 sc in each st around. (12 sc)
- Round 7: *1 sc in the first 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st,* repeat around. (15 sc)
- Round 8: 1 sc in each st around. (15 sc)
- Round 9: *1 sc in the first 4 sts, 2 sc in the next st,* repeat around. (18 sc)
- Round 10: 1 sc in each st around. (18 sc)
- Round 11: *1 sc in the first 5 sts, 2 sc in the next st,* repeat around. (21 sc)
- Round 12: 1 sc in each st around. (21 sc)
Finish off, weave in ends. Add white bulky yarn
- Round 13: 1 sc in each st around. (21 sc)
Finish off, weave in ends. Sew some white yarn on top of hat then sew the hat in place.
