Reversible Winter Vest!

Hey everybody, my name is Duana Chandler (from @duana_m_chandler and @duanastudio on IG) and I love to sew and hack patterns! The weather here in Virginia hasn’t been super cold, so wearing a coat isn’t really necessary. BUT jackets and vests are definitely perfect for the season! I chose to use an old school Simplicity Pattern, 1499, that I have had in my stash for years and have been wanting to use! I have been looking for a multipurpose vest to wear, and this pattern is easy and great for beginners. I believe this can even be a first sewing outfit project as long as you know the basic sewing terms and how to use a sewing machine! What I love is that the pattern is reversible! I love a good plush vest, however I ALSO wanted to use this plaid fabric I’ve had for YEARS, so it’s like getting two vests instead of one 🙂 So let’s hop into this tutorial!

 

MATERIALS:

• 2 yards of fabric
• 2 yards of plush fabric
• Clover Wonder Clips
• 22”-24” separating zipper
• Simplicity Pattern 1499
• Clover Patchwork Scissors
• thread

 

TUTORIAL:

1. I cut pattern pieces 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. Full disclaimer, I cut pattern piece number 3, which is the pocket, but I thought it was too small, so I made square pockets instead and I loved it so much more!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. With right sides together, use wonder clips side front to the front, matching notches at raw edges. Do the same for the back and side back pieces. Stitch together using a basic straight stitch. I also want to say that wonder clips are fantastic! They help keep everything together.

3. Stitch the plush fur fabric together in the exact same way. I am already excited seeing how nice the plush is starting to look. If you want the plush side to have pockets, this is a good time to add it.

4. Stitch the collars of the plaid fabric and the plush fabric.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

5. Stitch on the separating zipper to the main fabric.

6. With right sides together, stitch both the plaid and plush fabric together by the collar, the zipper, and the bottom. Don’t stitch the armhole yet. Turn it all right sides out. Then, stitch around the armholes.

And you’re all done! This was a very easy pattern, which is awesome for a last minute sewing project 🙂 I know clothes are really expensive for kids too, especially with how quickly they grow out of everything! This is a perfect project to get more use out of your kid’s clothes if you were to create a smaller version with their measurements! 🙂
