Scrappy Pencil Case Bookmark- Sewing Tutorial
Hi friends! My name is Faith Essenburg, I am a maker of quilts and small things and contribute here at Clover monthly. This month I went practical and made something that has been missing from my life, and of course, I had to make it scrappy with my special horded Neon Liberty fabrics and big stitches. This Scrappy Pencil Case Bookmark can be whipped up in under an hour and you can customize the closure with what you have on hand, snaps, buttons, and even a length of ribbon to wrap around itself.
What you will need:
8 strips of fabric 7.5×1.5 inches
Batting 7.5×7.5
Lining 7.5×7.5
Length of flat elastic (any elastic will work in a pinch) 7.5 long
Snaps for closure (or buttons, even Velcro will work)
Clover Gold Eye Embroidery Needle- Art No. 235
Clover Coin Thimble-Art No. 6014
Cut, sew and iron your strips of fabric together. Pin to batting and add hand or machine quilting, I have used my favorite Wonder Pins to baste. My other tools are Clover Gold Eye Embroidery Needles along with a deep plum 12 weight thread from Aurifil (2468), and always using my coin thimble from Clover as well.
Trim your quilted piece to 7.5 inches, this will cut a little off the bottom edge or you can leave it as is. Place your quilted piece face up and with your rows going horizontally, place your elastic piece 2-4 inches from the right, mine ended up a little off centered but it still worked. Place your lining fabric right side down on top of the panel and hold in place with Wonder Clips, another of my favorite tools. Sew around the edges leaving a 3 inch opening along one side. Turn right side out and push corners out.
Fold your opening closed and stitch around the sides as close to the edges as possible. Fold one side up by 2 3/4 inches and stitch the side edges closed, going over both ends twice to keep the stitches secure. Add your snaps following the instructions on the packaging, or add a button and buttonhole, or even a strip of Velcro.
This little pattern is very customizable, my highlighters are a bit longer and they fit perfectly and now I have a bookmark with highlighters because some books are just so good they need to be drawn in color.
This is one of those fun little patterns that need to be made over and over again and will be perfect for gifting with a favorite book. I would love to see if you make one, tag me on Instagram @faithessenburg.
I will be back again next month with something green and using another one of my favorite fun tools.
