Easy Top-Down Unisex Beanie Crochet Pattern

Hi Everyone!  I’m Ashley, the designer and maker behind The Loopy Lamb.  I’m so excited to be invited back to the Clover blog to share a free crochet pattern to make my Easy Top-Down Unisex Beanie.

When I started to think about this design, I knew I wanted to create a simple top down beanie that could be easily customized so that makers like you can make a hat that helps you to express yourself.  This hat, as it’s name suggests is unisex and can work for everyone.  You see my husband sporting this hat in my pictures below because he liked it so much, he swiped it as I was cutting my last yarn end.

This beanie is crocheted using a bulky, size 5 weight yarn called Patons Inspired.  It’s an acrylic/wool blend yarn that was absolutely lovely to work with.  This is my third project using this yarn and I’m sure it won’t be my last.

Skill Level:

  • Easy

Terminology:

  • U.S. Terminology

Supplies:

Abbreviations:

  • BLO = Back Loop Only
  • CH = Chain
  • FLO = Front Loop Only
  • FO = Finish Off
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet
  • HDCINC = Half Double Crochet Increase/2 HDC in same ST
  • MC = Magic Circle
  • SL ST = Slip Stitch
  • ST = Stitch

Finished Sizes:

  • Medium Adult (21” circumference x 9” height) – find the Teen/Small Adult and Large Adult sizes in the ad-free PDF version of this pattern

Gauge:

  • 12 sts x 10 rounds in HDC = 4 inches

Notes:

  • This pattern is worked in joined rounds from the top down.
  • Gauge is vital to ensuring that your hat will fit as expected. Do a gauge swatch of HDC stitches to check your gauge.  Use whatever hook size allows you to match gauge.
  • Always join your rounds in the top of the first HDC of the round, not the CH.
  • The CH 1 at the start of every round does not count as a stitch
  • Always start your rounds in the first stitch of the last round.
