Boho Bedroom Redo

Hello friends!  I’m so excited to share a project with you today that my 13 year old grand-daughter, Jillian, and I have been working on for the last few months!  In the summer she told me that her parents had given her permission to re-do her bedroom into a Boho themed room and she was so excited.  As she began to tell me what her vision was for her bedroom I got really excited for her and thought maybe I could help her out a bit by sewing some pillows, a blanket and a few other things.

I decided to put the idea to Shannon Fabrics and see if they would like to be involved in the project.  I had Jillian put together an inspiration board with her ideas, fabric choices and colors.  (She had a blast putting that together!)   We emailed it to Shannon Fabrics and hardly any time went by and boxes started arriving with awesome fabric for the bedroom redo!  Every teenager’s dream right?  (I would also like to mention that Fairfield World provided all the pillow inserts and quilt batting for this bedroom project as well! )

Jillian and I began sewing pillow covers first.  She wanted to be involved with the sewing, and making envelope pillow covers is always such an easy and quick project.

I’ll be honest in telling you that I have not sewn a lot with Minky fabric and none at all with Shannon Fabrics Luxe Cuddle.  So it was a learning curve for me as well.  But I could not get over how forgiving it was to sew with!   I like to put a zipper in pillow covers but I wasn’t sure how that would go with the thickness of the Luxe Cuddle fabric, especially in the large body pillow that we made.  So we used Velcro for a closure and its so awesome how you can hardly see the stitches in the fabric.  (Typically an envelope style pillow cover doesn’t require a zipper, but the body pillow is so long that it really needed something to hold the fabric closed.)  I think this body pillow made with the Luxe Cuddle Strips might be our favorite thing!

Above is the back of the large body pillow with the velcro closure.

We also sewed a round pillow using Shannon Embrace Double Gauze fabric.  I love sewing with Double Gauze and making a pillow cover with it was super fun.  I would never have chosen the Embrace Sand color to go in this bedroom, but Jillian chose it and guess what?  She was right!!  It is such a great contrast to the other colors.  This round pillow was super fun to make and  Jillian found an old vintage button in my stash and it was perfect for the center.

All the pillows were just so fun to make.  We each have our favorites in the fabric but honestly I think my favorite is the Luxe Cuddle Demi Rose fabrics, which we got in white and dusty rose colors.  I mean honestly… isn’t it so beautiful?   We also both love the Spring Flowers Cuddle as well.

Jillian is positively in love with the Luxe Cuddle Frost Merlot blanket that we made.  I thought this would be hard to sew, so honestly I saved it for the last.  But it was SO EASY.  Jillian wanted it in all the same fabric, both front and back and she didn’t want a contrasting binding.  I followed a great tutorial here for the blanket we made.  It was easy, fast and came out absolutely gorgeous.  The one thing is that the Luxe Cuddle is very fluffy (YAY!) and can wod up in the presser foot if you’re not careful and it slows the sewing down quite a bit.   So we used the Clover Hold It Precision Stiletto to hold down some of the thickness as it fed through the presser foot and that worked like a charm.

I was also a little worried about how it would look after going through the wash but my daughter said it was even more beautiful after!

Jillian was insistent on some Faux Fur to cover either a chair cushion or a bench cushion.  Her momma decided that there just wasn’t enough room for a bench in her bedroom so we covered her desk chair cushion instead. We used the Arctic Fox Faux Fur that is just luxurious and feels so real!  The backing of the cushion is simple white solid Cuddle Minky and I installed a zipper in that.   I was nervous about how this cushion cover would sew together around the corners with the thick fur as well as it needing to be pleated around the corners.  I was so surprised at how easy it was to sew the fur and how forgiving it was in hiding the pleats.  You cannot see a single mistake that I made in getting it to sew around the corners (and I had plenty)!   It’s a perfect addition to this corner of the bedroom at her little painting desk.  (Jillian is quite an amazing water color painter and she spends a lot of time at this little desk.)

Pictured above is the back of the chair cushion with zipper installed in white Cuddle Minky.

We were so shocked to receive a HUGE 32 inch round pillow insert from Fairfield World and it sat on my sewing studio floor for a month before I finally decided to tackle the cover for it.  I was winging it the whole way and I cannot even believe how beautiful it finished with this most gorgeous Luxe Cuddle Jupiter Rosewater fabric.  I used Clover Wonder Clips to hold everything in place on the curve and it sewed up like a dream.  We love this huge round cushion!!!   I also used a Velcro closure on the back of this pillow cover it holds it all intact nicely and can be removed for washing.

And then… there was a Faux Fur rug!!!!  Oh my word!  How FUN was this project!!!  It was so simple and added such a fun finish to the room.  All Jillian did was use a marker to draw her rug design on the back of the Faux Fur fabric.  Then we used the absolutely amazing Clover Scissors (Large Patchwork Scissors 493/L) to cut along the drawn lines.  We did not actually cut the fur; we simply cut the backing of the fur by pushing the sharp edge of the scissors under the backing and cutting that… then pulling the fur apart as we went.  It kept any shedding from happening and also gave it a more realistic look.   Like Jillian said, “Wow that was easy and so satisfying”!  And how FUN is it on her bedroom floor with that awesome round cushion on it?  It is the perfect lounging and reading spot.  (I should have a picture of my grand-girls large Standard Poodle napping here because it’s his favorite spot in the house now!)

So here are two side by side before and after pictures of the bedroom!

Jillian now has such a beautiful Boho bedroom.  She and I both learned so much about sewing with all the amazing Shannon Fabrics: Cuddle Minky, Luxe Cuddle, Digital Cuddle, and Faux Fur fabrics that are absolutely the most incredible quality.  I can’t say enough about how easy it was to work with and how happy I am with the finished product!

I used all my favorite Clover notions in working on this project:  Rotary Cutter with 60mm blade, Clover Flower Head Pens, Wonder Clips, Scissors, Precision Stiletto and yes even my favorite Seam Ripper 482/W!

Clover Sewing Notions, Shannon Fabrics and Fairfield World are the very best combination to create a beautiful Boho Bedroom Redo!!!

This project was a joy from beginning to end!

Oh and one last photo for fun.  Last week Jillian and her little sister Rosetta and their friend Ruth spent the freezing cold night in their tree house!  Granted the tree house is a very nice tree house in the woods on our farm but there is no electricity or heating of any kind and it was so cold with temperatures in the 20’s that night.  They all three had blankets I made from Luxe Cuddle as well as all of Jillian’s new pillows (and yes, some that we made Rosetta as well) and the next morning they said they cuddled down in the warm blankets and pillows and were cozy all night… they actually didn’t come out of the tree house until the next morning!

Happy Holidays friends!  I hope your Christmas is the very best.  If I don’t “see” you again before the New Year, I wish you the very best in 2022.

Now sit down and sew yourself a Luxe Cuddle quilt and read a good book by the fire (or spend a cozy night in a tree house)!

P.S.  What I failed to mention is that not only did Shannon Fabrics send fabric for Jillian but they also sent some for her little sister Rosetta.  We didn’t do a full bedroom makeover for Rosetta as she loves her room how it is.  But watch my IG account @redfeedsack next week as I post some pictures from Rosetta’s room with all her new gorgeous pillows and blankets!
