Yo Ho Ho Halloween Projects

Hi there, Erin from CraftsEverywhere and I’m going to show how you how to make some fun Halloween projects today!

I made up some pirate-themed knitting charts that can be used for many different types of objects, including pillows, wall hangings, sweaters and more. I made a pillow and a wall hanging for this but your options are endless!

I will include instructions on how I made the pillow and notes on the wall hanging in this post.

This is an intermediate pattern. You can either work one of the charts into a project using the fair isle method, duplicate stitch it on to a finished project or do a combination of both.

Skill Level

Terms

  • st(s) – Stitch(es)
  • co – cast on
  • St mk – Stitch marker
  • Pl st mk – Place stitch marker
  • P – Purl
  • K – Knit
  • (RS) – Right side
  • (WS) – Wrong side
  • MC – Main Color
  • CC – Contrast Color
  • Fair Isle – Stranded colorwork to make knitting in multiple colors
  • Duplicate Stitch – Using a contrast color of yarn threaded through a tapestry needle to trace over stitches that have already been completed to make a design

Pillow

Notes

  • I used chart 3 for the pillow and worked the entire thing in the round. I used the fair isle method for most of the pillow and then as the spacing became wider for the top 6 rounds of the design, I duplicate stitched it on after finishing.
  • This pattern is very easy to adjust length on both the length and width by adding extra rows/rounds of stockinette.
  • I placed an additional st mk after st 47 to mark the division between the two designs.
  • To make an 18″ pillow, use the suggested yarn and needles.

Materials

Gauge

2″ = 5 sts x 7 rows in stockinette with 10 mm needles and 1 strand of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick

Pattern

Co 95 sts with one strand of MC Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick and 10 mm US 15 circular knitting needles or desired yarn/needle combination. Pl st mk to work in the round.

Rounds 1-4 – K all sts in MC (95).

Rounds 5-46 – Follow Chart 3 for fair isle or knit all rounds in MC if using duplicate stitch.

**Drop CC after round 46 if using fair isle method.**

Rounds 47-51 – K all sts.

Bind off using method of choice.

Finishing

Sew in ends on the inside if using fair isle method. Add any parts of the design in duplicate stitch if needed and sew in all ends.

Seam the bottom of the pillow, add 18″ pillow insert then seam the top or add buttons or other closure method if you would like it to be removable.

I added the poms using the size small 45 mm Clover pom pom maker and tied them around the top and side edges once the seams were complete.

Wall Hanging

Notes

  • I knit a black rectangle with a garter stitch border to help with curling edges then added chart 1 with duplicate stitch to the piece after finishing.
  • The garter stitch border is in addition to the chart as shown which is the reason I cast on 51 sts instead of 47.
  • I highly recommend using stitch markers to block out where your design will go before beginning to duplicate stitch!

Materials

  • Takumi Bamboo Knitting Needles Circular 16″ No. 11 (8 mm) – Art. No 3016/16-11
  • Darning Needle Set – Art. No 3121

    • Suggested worsted weight yarn held double or 1 strand of bulky weight yarn in two contrasting colors

Round 5 – (RS) K all sts

Rounds 6-47 (Or desired height) – Repeat rounds 4-5

Rounds 48-50 – K all sts
