Tips to Start Embroidering
By Rebecca Greco
February is National Embroidery Month and this is the perfect chance to get started with this craft if you’ve never tried it!
Embroidery is one of my favorite travel projects, I always keep a hoop ready to pull out and stitch if I get stuck in a waiting room. I love how portable it is and how easy it is to get started, you don’t need an expensive machines or anything big. As long as you have a piece of fabric, a hoop, embroidery floss, and a needle, you’re ready to get started.
There are a lot of amazing embroidery patterns out there, but I wanted to share one of my favorite ways to get started with embroidery. Instead of drawing a pattern or using a store bought one, you can stitch directly onto the printed design of fabric.
There are so many fabric options and you do as much or as little stitching as you want. It’s also a fun way to try out different stitches and techniques.
The Clover Embroidery Hoops is really simple to use and keeps the fabric tight when you’re stitching. If you are going to embroider on a quilting cotton, you might find it helpful to use a piece of fusible interfacing on the back of the fabric to add stability to it.
Embroidering on printed fabric is a really fun way for beginners to dip their toe into embroidery. You can simply use the lines of the pattern to stitch along or you can get fancier with trying different stitches. The backstitch is a simple and versatile stitch.
Mollie Makes has a great collection of free stitch tutorials if you want to expand your embroidery skills.
Once you are finished you can frame your fabric or display it in a hoop if you’d like to use it as decoration. Or you can then use the fabric to sew onto a bigger piece.Either way, it’s a fun and quick way to make a beautiful craft project.
