Carrara Potholder & Mitt – Knit Patterns

Hopefully you were able to get out and enjoy the warm weather. If you are anything like me though, you can’t wait for those first cool days of fall. Whichever you prefer, this pattern is for you. My Carrara Potholder & Mitt set is perfect for keeping your hands and counters safe in any season.
My inspiration for this pattern came from the grey and white marble found in the area surrounding Carrara, Italy. The way the two yarn colors weave together mimics the striations in the unique marble that you find only in Carrara. Whether you are cooking a traditional Italian dish from Carrara like Tordelli alla Carrarina, a recipe your mother used to make you, or just baking a good batch of cookies, this mitt and potholder set is perfect for it all. Modern and simplistic, these accessories are the perfect addition to your kitchen and will be your favorites in no time!

Materials
- 2 skeins of Lily Sugar ‘n Cream Super Size Yarn – Medium Weight (100% Cotton). Each skein is 200 yds (183 m) (sample was knit with overcast and ecru). You will need about 168 yds (154 m) to complete one potholder and about 103 yds (94 m) to complete one mitt. You can easily substitute any medium weight 100% cotton yarn, just make sure to check your gauge.
- Takumi Knitting Needles US 8 (5.0 mm) – Art. No 3011/8
- Tapestry Needle Set (Bent Tip) – Art. No 3121
- Mini Patchwork Scissors – Art. No 493/CW
- Spring Tape Measure – Art. No 806

Gauge
14 sts + 18 rows = 4” in stockinette
Abbreviations
- CO cast on
- k knit
- p purl
- sl1p slip 1 purlwise
- sl1k slip 1 knitwise
- k2tog knit 2 stitches together
- ssk slip 2 stitches knitwise, knit these 2 stitches together through back loops
- sts stitches
- yo yarn over
- ktbl knit through back loop
- wyif with yarn in front
- BO bind off
Carrara Potholder Pattern:
Long-tail CO 48 sts holding two strands of yarn together as one
Row 1: BO 21 sts, k to end of row
Row 2: sl1p wyif, k to last st, p1
Row 3: sl1k, k to end
Repeat Row 2 & 3 until piece measures 14 inches
BO all sts
Weave in ends
Fold the piece in half as seen in the photos below and seam up the two sides using one of the yarn colors (I chose the ecru, and I seamed using mattress stitch in the “V”s or knit-looking stitches created by the edging, feel free to use your preferred seaming method).
Attach the loop and weave in the ends.
Carrara Mitt Pattern:
Long-tail CO 19 sts holding two strands of yarn together as one
Row 1: sl1k, k to end
Row 2: sl1p wyif, k to last st, p1
Repeat Row 1 & 2 five times
Row 13: sl1k, k to end
Row 14: sl1p wyif, k1, k2tog, k to last 4 sts, ssk, k1, p1
Repeat Row 13 & 14 five times
Row 25: sl1k, k to end
Row 26: sl1p wyif, k to last st, p1
Row 27: sl1k, k1, yo, k to last 2 sts, yo, k2
Row 28: sl1p wyif, k1, ktbl, k to last 3 sts, ktbl, k1, p1
Repeat Row 27 & 28 five times
Repeat Row 1 & Row 2 fifteen times
Repeat Row 13 & 14 six times
Repeat row 1 & 2 once
Repeat Row 27 & 28 six times
Repeat Row 1 & 2 five times
Row 105: sl1k, k to end
BO all sts
Weave in ends
Fold up both ends into the center as shown in photos below and seam along edges creating two pockets using one of the yarn colors (I chose the ecru, and I seamed using mattress stitch in the “V”s or knit-looking stitches created by the edging, feel free to use your preferred seaming method).
Weave in the rest of the ends
