
The Garden Patch Backpack
Meet the Garden Patch Backpack – where vintage charm meets everyday adventure! Made with classic granny squares in soft, springtime hues, this backpack is as fun to make as it is to wear. Whether you’re packing it for a picnic or a stroll through the farmer’s market, it’s the perfect blend of nostalgia and practicality! Let’s embark upon this crochet adventure together and get started
MATERIALS:
- Clover Amour Crochet Hook (H/5.0mm)
- Yarn Needle
- Patchwork Scissors
- worsted weight yarn
- cream, light pink, pink, and green
FLOWER GRANNY SQUARE INSTRUCTIONS (make 14):
Make a slip knot and ch 4, sl st into the first ch.
- Round 1: Ch 3 (count as a dc), 11 dc into the circle. Sl st into the top of the beginning ch 3. (12 dc) *If switching colors, do so here*
- Round 2: Ch 4 (count as a tr), tr2tog into the same st, ch 2, *tr3tog into the next st, ch 2,* repeat from * around until you have 12 petals in total. Sl st into the top of the first petal.
- If switching colors, do so here.
- Round 3: Sl st to the next ch 2 sp, ch 4 (count as a tr), 2 tr into the same ch sp, ch 1, *3 dc into the next ch sp, ch 1, 3 dc into the next ch sp, ch 1, (3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) into the next ch sp (corner made), ch 1,* repeat from * all the way around ending with a (3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr) in the corner sp where you began, ch 3, sl st into the top of the beginning ch 4.
ASSEMBLY:
Assemble the squares by whip stitching them together. You will do as follows: 4 squares in the front, 4 squares in the back, 2 on each side, and 2 on the bottom.
Now you have your bag put together, it’s time to make the top border.
Attach cream yarn in any stitch along the top of your bag.
Ch 2
Round 1: 1 hdc in each dc, placing 1 hdc in the side of where each square meets together. Join with a sl st to the first hdc.
Finish off cream, add green.
Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Finish off. Weave in ends.
LACE MOTIF:
With cream, make a magic ring.
Row 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 6 dc in magic ring. (7 dc)
Row 2: Turn, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in first st, 2 dc in each st until you have one st left, dc in last st (top of ch 3). (13 dc)
Finish off cream, add pink.
Row 3: Turn, ch 5 (counts as dc + ch 2), sk 1 st, 1 dc in the next st, [ch 2, sk 1, dc in the next] repeat to the end. (7 dc, 6 ch sps)
Row 4: Turn, ch 3 (counts as first dc), [(dc, ch 1, dc) in ch sp, dc in next dc], repeat to the end. (19 dc, 6 ch sps)
Finish off pink, add green.
Row 5: Turn, ch 6 (counts as dc + ch 3), sc in the ch sp, [ch 6, sc in the next ch sp] repeat to the last ch sp, ch 3, 1 dc in the last st. (7 ch loops)
Row 6: Turn, ch 1, 1 sc in the first st, 4 sc in the ch 3 sp, 8 sc in each of the next 5 ch 6 sps, 4 sc in the last ch sp, sc in the top of the dc (third ch of that ch loop)
Row 7: Ch 1, turn your work 90 degrees so you are working across the top (flat edge) of the doily, sc evenly across the top to give a nice straight edge.
Finish off green.
Now whip stitch the motif along the back of the bag at the top, making sure to have the right facing out when you flip it over the front of the bag.
Then attach cream in any st along the top and ch 1.
Round 1: 1 sc evenly in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Finish off.
BAG TIE:
With pink and cream held together, ch 100.
Weave the tie in and out through the row of hdc and sc.
BACK STRAP:
With cream and green held together, ch 121.
Row 1: 1 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across. Finish off..
Sew onto back of bag.
