Stars & Stripes Garland!

Celebrate Independence Day in style with a vibrant crochet garland, perfect for adding a handmade touch to your festive decor. This easy-to-follow pattern will guide you in creating shooting stars and yummy treats that capture the spirit of the 4th of July!

 

MATERIALS:

 

INSTRUCTIONS (garland rope):

If you would like to make this garland longer, make a base chain of multiples of 18, then + 8

With blue, ch 188.

  • Row 1: 1 dc in the 6th ch from the hook, *ch 1, sk 1, 1 dc in the next ch,* repeat from * across. Finish off.

INSTRUCTIONS (shooting star – make 3 stars):

With white:

  • Round 1: Start with a magic loop, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 9 dc in magic loop. Pull to tighten, sl st to join. (10 dc in total)
  • Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same space, (dc, trc, ch 1, trc, dc) all in next st, *sc in next st, (dc, trc, ch 1, trc, dc) in next stitch, repeat from * 3 times, sl st to starting sc. Finish off, weave in ends. (5 sc, 5 star points)
  • Once stars are completed, block them to shape, making the tips pointy.
  • Add strands of red and blue yarn to one side of the star.

INSTRUCTIONS (watermelon slice):

With red:

  • Row 1: Start with a magic loop, ch 3 (counts as a dc), 5 dc in the ring. Pull tight. Turn. (6 dc)
  • Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st across. Turn. (12 dc)
  • Row 3: Ch 3, *2 dc in the first/next st, 1 dc in the next st, repeat from * across. Change color to white. (18 dc)
  • Row 4: Ch 1, turn, *2 sc in the first/next st, 1 sc in the next two sts, repeat from *across. Change color to green. (24 sc)
  • Row 5: Ch 2, turn, * 2 hdc in the first/next st, 1 hdc in the next three sts, repeat from * to the end of the row. (30 hdc)
  • Finish off, weave in ends. Add some seeds by using the black yarn and yarn needle.

INSTRUCTIONS (hot dog – make 2 buns):

For the bun, with tan, ch 17.

  • Round 1: 1 hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across, place 3 hdc in the last ch, now turn and work along the other side of the base ch, 1 hdc in each ch across, place 3 hdc in the last ch, join with a sl st to the first sc.
  • Round 2: Ch 1, 1 sc in the same st, 1 sc in the next 13 sts, 2 sc in each of the next 3 sts, 1 sc in the next 14 sts, 2 sc in each of the remaining 3 sts. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Finish off.

For the hot dog, with red, ch 17.

  • Round 1: 1 hdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across, place 3 hdc in the last ch, now turn and work along the other side of the base ch, 1 hdc in each ch across, place 3 hdc in the last ch, join with a sl st to the first sc. Finish off.
  • Place the hot dog in between the buns so they are all overlapping slightly and whip stitch together.
  • For mustard, ch 13. Finish off. Sew onto the hot dog.

INSTRUCTIONS (ice cream):

For the cone, with tan, ch 2.

  • Row 1: 1 sc in the first ch. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 2: 2 sc in the next st. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 3: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in the next st. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 4: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 5: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc into each of the next 3 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 6: 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 7: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in each of the next 4 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 8: 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 9: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in each of the next 5 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 10: 1 sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 11: 2 sc in the first st, 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts. Ch 1, turn.
  • Row 12: Ch 1, sl st into each st across.
  • Now turn the cone and sc evenly around the edges of the cone. Join with a sl st to the first st. Finish off. Weave in ends.

For the ice cream, with white.

  • Row 1: Ch 3, 8 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook, turn. (8)
  • Row 2: Ch 3, 2 dc in each st across, turn. (16) Turn your work so you will be working along the bottom of the ice cream now
  • Row 3: Ch 1, 8 sc evenly across the bottom, turn. (8)
  • Row 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st across, turn. (8)
  • Row 5: Ch 1, (hdc, dc, hdc, hdc) in the first st, sl st into the next st, 2 dc into the next st, (dc, dc, hdc) into the next st, sl st into the next st, sc into the next st, 3 dc in the last st. Finish off. Weave in ends.
  • Using blue and red yarn, add the sprinkles. Then sew ice cream onto the cone.

For the cherry, with red.

  • Start with a magic circle, ch 2, 9 hdc inside the magic circle. Pull tight and join with a sl st to the first hdc. Finish off. Leave a long tail for sewing onto ice cream.

ASSEMBLY:

Place appliques in desired location along the rope and sew or whip stitch into place.
