DIY Heart-Shaped Purse <3

Hey Clover family! My name is Duana from @duana_m_chandler and @duanastudio on IG, and today I’m sharing a vinyl red heart-shaped bag JUST in time for Valentine’s Day <3 This bag is easier to make than it might look, and you can even add a little charm to the straps and it’s ready to go out for the day or a night out. Let’s get started with this pretty purse!!

MATERIALS:

TUTORIAL:

1) Begin by sketching out the desired shape of the purse onto a piece of paper. Next, lay the paper template onto a sheet of vinyl fabric and trace around it, ensuring to leave a bit of extra space for seam allowance. I used Clover’s rotary cutter to cut the vinyl, and I must say that it is very sharp and made cutting SO much easier and precise.

2) Do the same with the lining fabric. I did double the amount of lining fabric because I am going to use a set to make a design on the front vinyl fabric.

3) I drew straight lines from one end of the other to create the design. Doing it on a checkered lining fabric made it so much easier. It already looks so fabulous!

4) Now, I am going to work on the center with the zipper. I cut vinyl and lining at 3” x 19”. You can actually cut it as wide as you want, but I chose this width because I think it was a good size for my bag. You also want it to be slightly bigger than your zipper. Mine was about an inch longer on each side of the zipper.

5) With right sides together, sandwich the zipper between the vinyl and lining fabric. Topstitch the vinyl on the sides of the zipper.

6) Cut the bottom pieces and a piece to hold the D-rings. This is for the straps. These I cut around 5”x 20” each, but it doesn’t really matter the size until you are ready to stitch them together. It may be hard to see the lines I created, but those lines are where I will be stitching the zipper portion to the front and back heart. Stitch the bottom to the sides where the D-rings will be. Make sure you stitch it with the D-rings, right sides together.

7) Attach the zipper portion that includes the bottom to the heart front and back. Leave an opening to flip around right sides out. Create the straps using a long and thin piece of vinyl. Top stitch on both sides of the strap. Attach the strap extender to the D-ring and the main strap to the strap extender. Then your bag is complete!

Happy Valentine’s and Happy Stitching!
