Flower Pom-Pom Pillow!

Hello! It’s Duana (@duana_m_chandler on IG) of Duana Studio, and I’m excited to share a quick pillow that I made that can be a sweet accent piece to whatever room you’re in. We just bought a new house and I’ve been excited about adding some seasonal decor to just bring out the colors of the sofa in the living room. So here it goes!

Here are the materials you are going to need:

  • 3/4 yard of fabric for an 18” x 18” pillow.
  • 3 yards of trim
  • Pom poms
  • Clover Wonder Clips
  • Needle and thread
  • Pillow or poly fil

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut two pieces of fabric 20” x 20”. Whatever pillow size you use, just add 2 inches on each side to allow for seam allowances and to make sure your pillow or poly fil fits.

2. Add the trim by matching raw edges and holding it in place using wonder clips. Wonder clips are great for projects like these where you are holding together thicker pieces of fabric. Pins can sometimes be a challenge if the fabric is too thick.

3. Baste the two pieces together using the longest stitch on your sewing machine.

4. Take the pom poms and a needle and thread and pass the thread through the center of a flower and back through the other side once more. Tie the back with a knot to keep the Pom Pom in place. You can also use a fabric glue or glue gun if you want to speed up the process.

5. I didn’t add Pom poms to all of the flower centers. I did it at random, but you can always do that. I also didn’t do Pom poms on the back, but you can do that. Fun thing about the Pom poms is that you also don’t have to use it for flowers. You can do it on other types of fabric that you like. As the seasons change and we head towards the holidays, you can use Pom poms as ornaments for a Christmas tree fabric.

6. Add the other 20” x 20” fabric and place them right sides together. Use wonder clips to hold them in place. Stitch, leaving an opening big enough for pillow or poly fil to fit.

7. Turn right sides out and pass the pillow or poly fil through the opening.

8. To finish the raw edges, there are some quick options you can try. You can use fabric glue, which is my favorite option to finish open edges to get a clean finish. This is a great option for people who aren’t familiar with slip stitching or making an invisible stitch. Either one will give you the same look, so I went with fabric glue. I used wonder clips to hold the fabric in place and then glued it together.

9. And the accent pillow is done. It is easy, but will make a great difference in any room. Happy Stitching!
