Clover Needlecraft

Northern Braided Cowl

Hello, I’m April from OTH Crochet Nook. As much as I don’t like the cold, I love making warm and cozy handmade items all Winter long.  I rarely use lace weight yarn, but I couldn’t resist using it combined with a neutral worsted weight. It gave this cowl so much texture.  Have fun with your colour choices!

Special Stitch – Puff Stitch:

*Yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop. Repeat from * 4 more times. Yarn over, pull through all loops, chain 1.

For this pattern, your starting chain will need to be a multiple of 2. You can chain more or less depending on how wide you’d like your cowl. You are holding 2 strands of yarn together.

(lace weight and worsted weight held together)

Ch 24

Row 1: DC into the 5th chain from your hook. (the chain 4 at the beginning counts as a double crochet and chain 1), *Now work a puff stitch into the chain behind the double crochet just worked. Skip the next chain, DC into the next chain. Chain 1.  Repeat from * until the end of your foundation chain.  DC into the last stitch. Turn.

(*Row 2 will be repeated for the rest of the pattern/You will work in the chain 1 spaces only for every row from now on)

Row 2: Chain 2. Skip the first chain-1 space. (DC, ch 1) in the next stitch. Now work a puff stitch into the skipped chain-1 space. *Skip the next chain-1 space. (DC, ch 1) in the next chain-1 space. PS into the skipped chain-1 space. Repeat from * until the end of the row. DC in the last stitch.

Repeat Row 2 until desired length of cowl is reached.

I completed a total of 40 rows.

Seaming:

Line up ends together and seam together with single crochets.

Slip stitch and fasten off.

Weave in ends.

I can’t wait to see your Northern Braided Cowl.
