Boho Mandala Necklace
Hello! It’s Jennifer Ryan, the designer and blogger behind Celtic Knot Crochet. I am excited to be sharing the Boho Mandala Necklace project here on the Clover blog!
I love to crochet jewelry and mandalas and this project features both! I created 2 versions (one large and one small) using a very similar stitch pattern and the same embellishments so that you can easily create the size that best suits your style.
I’ll take you through each step of the project and you’ll even be able to watch a video tutorial here to help you work the stitches, attach the mandalas to the rings and add the embellishments. Let’s get started.
Skill Level: Easy
Supplies:
- Cotton Crochet Thread – Size 10 – 1 ball
- Soft Touch “Steel” Crochet Hook 1.50 mm- Art. No 1021
- Tassel Maker (Small)- Art. No 9940
- Tapestry needle- Art. No 238
- 3” (7.62 cm) wooden ring (Large) or 2” (5.08 cm) metal ring (Small)
- Wooden beads (various sizes/colors)
- Optional: Paint or stain to apply to wooden ring or beads
Finished Measurements: Large Mandala on ring = 3” diameter (7.62 cm); Small Mandala on ring = 2” diameter (5.08 cm); Necklace length – Approx. 28-32” (71- 81 cm)
Gauge: Round 1 of Larger Necklace = 5/8” (15 mm)
Round 1 of Smaller Necklace = 5/16” (7 mm)
(If your mandala turns out larger than the ring you plan to use, then you’ll need to go down in hook size)
Abbreviations:
YO (yarn over)
Hk (hook)
Lp (loop)
Ch (chain)
St (stitch)
Sl st (slip stitch)
Dc (double crochet)
Sk (skip)
Special Stitches:
Adjustable Ring -Wrap yarn around hand to create a loop; pull working end of yarn through lp with hk; work stitches into loop and then pull yarn tail to tighten and close up center hole

Back Loop Only = insert hk through back loop of each stitch
Working around ring = insert hk into next st on mandala while working over ring in front; YO, draw up a lp through st and bring up so on top of ring; YO at top of ring, pull through both lps on hk; (I show you how to do this in the project video tutorial here)
Notes:
A simple mandala is crocheted and then attached to a ring
Then a tassel, beads and necklace length are added

Instructions:
Special stitches are printed in bold and italicized text and defined above
Large Mandala:
Round 1: Work ch 3, 11 dc in an adjustable ring (Ch-3 counts as the first dc); join with a sl st in top of starting ch-3. (12 dc)
Round 2: (Ch 7, sk next st, sl st in next st) around ending with ch 4, dc in sl st at base of first ch-7. (6 ch-7 sps)
Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same sp; (ch 5, sc in next sp, ch 5, sc in same sp) around to last ch-7 sp; ch 5, sc in 1st ch-7 sp; ch 2, dc in first sc of round. (12 ch-5 sps)
Round 4: Ch 6 (counts as first hdc and ch-4 sp); (hdc in next ch-5 sp, ch 4) around ending with sl st in 2nd ch of starting ch-6. (12 ch-4 sps)
Round 5: Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc); (4 hdc in next ch-4 sp, hdc in next hdc) around ending with sl st to top of starting ch-2. Fasten off leaving a long tail for attaching to ring.

Small Mandala:
Round 1: Work ch 1, 6 sc in an adjustable ring; join with sl st in 1st sc. (6 sc)
Round 2: (Ch 7, sl st in next st) around ending with ch-4, dc in sl st at base of first ch-7. (6 ch-7 sps)
Rounds 3 & 4: Work as for Large Mandala
*The next round you will be attaching the mandala to the metal ring while crocheting*
Round 5: With Right Side of Mandala facing and while holding mandala behind ring, ch 1; Working in back loops only sc in each st around while working around ring; join with sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off.
(Most of my mandalas I crocheted all in one color but you can change colors as you like for each round. For the green necklace with the daisy flower in the center (pictured above), I crocheted Round 1 in yellow, Round 2 in white and then the remaining Rounds in green.)
Finishing/Assembly:
Large Mandala:
Optional: Paint or stain wooden ring desired color
Position mandala with Right Side facing inside ring; With long yarn tail and yarn needle wrap thread around ring and insert from front to back through every other stitch around; Make sure to knot securely on Wrong Side and weave in ends
Large and Small Mandala:
Make tassel with matching or coordinating thread – You can watch my video tutorial of how to use Clover’s small tassel maker here
Thread bead onto center cord of tassel and secure to base of mandala on Wrong Side
Chain a length that is about 35” long
(For my Large Mandala Necklace I used 2 chain lengths to give a thicker look)
Fold chain length in half and thread through top of mandala/ring as shown in photos making sure placement is directly opposite tassel so mandala hangs correctly
Thread on beads tying various overhand knots along length as desired (see photo below for some bead placement ideas)
Tie ends of chain length in overhand knot or sew together with yarn needle – weave in ends
Tada! Your Boho Mandala Necklace is complete!
I hope you enjoyed making this project. I was able to make one in less than an hour and love how all the different colors and beads look. These work up so quickly you could make one to match each outfit or to give to several friends as gifts!
