Starry Midnight Sky Shawl – Crochet Pattern

Crocheting is my happy place! I find joy and peace while playing with my yarns and hooks! It’s very therapeutic!

Hi! My name is Elisa. I’m the maker and the designer behind Strings and Cuddles. This isn’t my first time being featured here. I have shared a few of my designs here and I love working with Clover USA. I am always grateful to them for giving me this platform to share with you some of my new designs.

Yes, I love designing shawls! It is one of my favorite things to create, but I also crochet other stuff. You can check all my work on my blog, Instagram and Ravelry.

Let’s talk about my new shawl pattern which I named the Starry Midnight Sky Shawl. This pattern features the Star Stitch and Half Double Crochet stitches. These stitches create a beautiful pattern and texture that’s why I fell in love with it!

When making a shawl, I always use fingering weight yarn along with my go-to Clover Amour Crochet Hook. The yarn I used in making this shawl was a custom-order from Daisy Stitch Co. Of course, I asked for blue as the main color because it is my favorite color, and also I was aiming for a midnight sky color. The added sparkles resemble the shining stars. Shelly didn’t disappoint me! Her work turned out amazing!

Now, let’s get started!

Special Stitch

Star StitchIt takes 2 rows to complete the look of a finished star stitch.

Row 1: The following steps refer to the First Row of Crochet Star Stitch.

  1. Make an even number of foundation chains.
  2. Insert hook in 2nd ch from the hook, yarn over, pull up a loop — 2 loops on hook. Insert hook in 3rd ch from hook, yarn over, pull up a loop — 3 loops on hook. Insert hook in 4th ch from hook, yarn over, pull up a loop — 4 loops on hook. Insert hook in 5th ch from hook, yarn over, pull up a loop — 5 loops on hook. Insert hook in 6th ch from hook, yarn over, pull up a loop — 6 loops on hook.
  3. Yarn over and pull through 6 loops on hook.
  4. Ch 1 – this creates the “eye” of the Star Stitch. One Star Stitch just made.

To make the next Star Stitch, follow the following steps:

  1. Insert hook in ch-1 space (‘eye’ of the star stitch), yarn over, pull up a loop — 2 loops on hook.
  2. Insert hook in the last spike of the Star Stitch just made, yarn over, pull up a loop — 3 loops on hook.
  3. Insert hook in same ch/st as the last loop pulled up on the Star Stitch just made, yarn over, pull up a loop — 4 loops on hook.
  4. Insert hook in next ch/st, yarn over hook, pull up a loop — 5 loops on hook. Insert hook in next ch/st, yarn over hook, pull up a loop — 6 loops on hook.
  5. Yarn over and pull through 6 loops on hook.
  6. Ch 1 – this creates the “eye” of the Star Stitch. One Star Stitch just made.

Repeat the last 1 – 6 steps to the last chain or stitch of the row. Then HDC in the last ch/st as the last loop pulled up on the last Star Stitch just made. This completes the 1st row of the Star Stitch.

Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a st), work 2 HDC in every ch-1 space (the ‘eye’ of the Star Stitch from prev row) across, HDC into the top st/spike of the Star Stitch from prev row.

You just completed the Star Stitch pattern. For a better understanding of the Star Stitch pattern, watch this video tutorial but always refer to my pattern as I made a modification to achieve the design I have in mind.

Notes

  1. Read the pattern carefully before starting.
  2. This pattern is worked flat, sideways.
  3. The turning ch 1 and ch 2 do not count as a st.
  4. The gauge for this pattern is not that important. With this being said, the pattern can be easily customized to the size you like, how big or wide it may be. Also, you can use different yarn weights but when you do, adjust also the crochet hook size according to the size in the yarn label.
  5. Remember, when working on the Star Stitch, always count the loops on your hook before pulling through 6 loops on the hook.
  6. To avoid making mistakes and ripping off your work, always make sure that your Star Stitches are aligned vertically.
  7. You increase/decrease 1 Star Stitch in every other row.
