Catalina Sun Hat – Crochet Pattern

Hi everyone! I’m Jess and I am the crochet designer and blogger behind Sun Sand Stitch. My favorite designs are ones that are simple, practical and feature a boho flair.

Living in southern California, we experience summer almost year round so I love to create designs that I can use in warmer weather. One of those pieces is my latest design, the Catalina Sun Hat. This design is a basic sun hat that is very beginner friendly and can be customized to fit small and large heads! This hat is simple in design, so you’ll be able to whip one up just in time to hit the beach!

Pattern: Catalina Sun Hat

Materials:

Lion Brand Re-Up yarn (approx. 230 yards for size small, approx. 275 yards for size medium, approx. 320 yards for size large) or cotton worsted weight #4 yarn
Amour Crochet Hook 4mm – Art. No 1045/G (or hook to obtain gauge)
Mini Patchwork Scissors – Art. No 493/CW
Darning Needle Set – Art. No 339
Locking Stitch Markers – Art. No 353

Pattern Notes:

This pattern is written in US terms
Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch
Numbers in parentheses at end of each round indicate number of stitches for that round
Pattern is written in three sizes: small, medium and large.

Stitches:

Ch = Chain
MR = Magic ring
Reverse sl st = reverse slip stitch
Sc = Single crochet
Sl st = slip stitch

Stitch explanation:

For the reverse slip stitch, you will turn your work and work a slip stitch in each stitch in the opposite direction of the previous rounds.

Gauge:

4 inches = 20 stitches x 16 rows

Finished Measurement:

Small: 22 inch circumference
Medium: 23 inch circumference
Large: 25 inch circumference
Brim (for all sizes): 3 inches wide

Round 1: Ch 1 and 6 sc into the ring. Sl st to top of ch 1 (6).

Round 2: Ch 1. 2 sc in each stitch around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (12).

Round 3: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next stitch. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (18).

Round 4: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 2 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (24).

Round 5: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 3 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (30).

Round 6: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 4 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (36).

Round 7: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 5 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (42).

Round 8: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 6 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (48).

Round 9: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 7 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (54).

Round 10: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 8 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (60).

Round 11: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 9 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (66).

Round 12: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 10 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (72).

Round 13: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 11 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (78).

Round 14: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 12 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (84).

Round 15: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 13 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (90).

Round 16: Ch 1. *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next 14 stitches. Repeat around. Sl st to top of ch 1 (96).

Round 17: Ch 1. Sc in each stitch around. Do not join at the end of the round (96).

Round 18: Sc in each stitch around. Place a stitch marker on the first stitch of the round (96).

Round 19-37: Sc in each stitch around. Move stitch marker up each round (96).

Begin hat brim.

Round 38: Sc in the back loops only of each stitch around (96).

Round 39: 2sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the next 5 stitches. Repeat around (112).

Round 40- 41: Sc in each stitch around (112).

Round 42: 2sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the next 6 stitches. Repeat around (128).

Round 43- 44: Sc in each stitch around (128).

Round 45: 2sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the next 7 stitches. Repeat around (144).

Round 46-47: Sc in each stitch around (144).

Round 48: 2sc in the first stitch, 1 sc in the next 8 stitches. Repeat around (160).

Round 49: Sc in each stitch around (160).

Round 50: Reverse slip stitch in each stitch around (160).

Cut yarn and weave in ends with a yarn needle.
