Freedom Pillows – Crochet Pattern

Hey friends! Rachel from Cozy Nooks Designs here. I am a crochet designer, blogger, and YouTuber. Today I am going to share with you two new intarsia crochet patterns – the 1776 Pillow & the USA Stars Pillow!

Phew! Can you believe it is nearly July 4th? It really snuck up on me this year. Thankfully these pillows can be whipped up fairly fast, so you still have some time to make them for the year.

The 1776 Pillow & the USA Stars Pillow are considered an experienced beginner pattern, but I have some YouTube and blog posts with different crochet techniques to aid you, so don’t be intimidated by it. These will be linked throughout the post.

Alright, let’s get to the patterns!

1776 Pillow

Materials:

  • Amour Crochet Hook, Size H/5.0 mm (Art. No 1047/H)
  • Worsted Yarn
    • 320 yards of worsted weight 4 yarn – MC
    • 65 yards of worsted weight 4 yarn – CC
  • 16″ x 16″ Pillow Insert
  • Mini Patchwork Scissors (Art. No 493/CW)
  • Darning Needle Set (Art. No 339)

Gauge:

15 sc sts = 4″ , 18 rows = 4″

Finished Size:

15.5″ x 15.5″

Terminology

US Crochet Terms Used

  • ch – chain
  • st/sts – stitch/stitches
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sc – single crochet
  • MC – Main Color (Cream)
  • CC – Contrast Color (Navy)
  • RS – Right Side
  • WS – Wrong Side

Notes

  • You will be making this from bottom up.
  • When you are on the RS of the piece, you will be on an odd row; when you are on the WS, you will be on an even row.
  • The ch 1 does not count as a st.
  • You can carry the non-dominant color along when using the new color or you can make separate bobbins for each color, which is what I recommend. If carrying the color, gently tug the non-dominant color to minimize show-through and make sure to carry your non-dominant color on the WS.
  • You need to be familiar with how to change colors using the “Yarn Under Technique”. This video from my YouTube channel also describes the technique.
