Hi everyone, it’s Elisa from @stringsandcuddles! Are you thrilled like I am that it’s finally getting warmer outside? I can now go to the park and playground and play in the yard with my girls because spring is such a lovely time of year. We all gather a sense of “new beginnings” during this time of year, and all I can say is GO FOR IT! The new crochet design I’m sharing with you today was inspired by this. I named this pattern “The Anew Shawl.” The word “anew” indicates that it is happening once more, but in a different way. There’s more to it than the first time. It pertains to various types of renewals and new beginnings, such as nature or life itself. This shawl with a two-row repeat pattern is quite easy to follow. Additionally, you can use any yarn weight and fiber with the appropriate hook size, or go up a size to make it more flowing and airy. For the spring and summer, I use cotton yarn.
There are SO many different ways to wear this shawl!!! Here are a few examples on how to recreate my style:
MATERIALS:
- Clover Amour Crochet Hook I (5.5 mm)
- or size to obtain gauge!
- Clover Jumbo Tapestry Needle (Bent Point)
- Clover Patchwork Mini Scissors
- Clover Quick-Locking Stitch Markers —5 pieces
- tape measure
- dk weight yarn (#3)
- I created mine with 1 roll of Caron Cotton Ripple Cakes!
NOTES:
- Read the pattern carefully before starting.
- This simple triangle shawl pattern is worked flat in back-and-forth rows, from the (center) top down.
- The gauge for this pattern is not particularly crucial. You can change the yarn weight and hook size to make your shawl.
- * * Repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed or repeat at specified locations.
- ( ) Work instructions within parentheses as many times as directed, or work a group of stitches all in the same stitch or space.
- I recommend using stitch markers to mark the first stitch, the first and last ch-1-sps, and the center-ch-sp of each row so you won’t miss it. Remember to move the stitch marker as you progress.
- The number of stitches in each row is indicated by the numbers at the end of the row.
- Gauge: 13 sts X 11 rows = 4 inches (unblocked)
- Skill level: adventurous beginner to intermediate
- Finished measurement: about 58 (length) x 22 (depth) inches (unblocked)
ABBREVIATIONS:
- ch(s): chain(s)
- flo: front loop only
- mr: magic ring
- pm: place marker
- rep: repeat
- sk: skip
- slst: slip stitch
- st(s): stitch(es)
- esc: extended single crochet—insert the hook in the designated st, yarn over, and pull up a loop (2 loops on the hook); yarn over, pull through only the first loop (2 loops on the hook); then yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops.
THE ANEW SHAWL PATTERN:
SETTING UP ROWS:
Start with a MR.
- Row 1: Ch1 (does not count as a stitch here and throughout), 4ESC into the ring, ch2 (center-ch-sp), 4ESC into the ring and pull tight the yarn tail to close the ring. PM in 1st and last sts. Turn. 8 sts + ch2 center-ch-sp
- Row 2: Ch1, (1ESC, PM, ch1, PM, 1ESC) in the 1st st, ch1, sk 1 st, 1ESC through the FLO of the next st, ch1, sk the next st, (1ESC, ch2, PM, 1ESC) in the center-ch-sp, ch1, sk 1 st, 1ESC through the FLO of the next st, ch1, sk the next st, (1ESC, ch1, PM, 1ESC, PM) in the last st. Turn. 8 sts + 6 ch-1-sp + 1 ch-2-center-sp
BODY:
- Row 3: Ch1, 3ESC in the 1st st, 1ESC in each st and ch-1-sp to the center-ch-sp, (1ESC, ch2, 1ESC) in the center-ch-sp, 1ESC in each st and ch-1-sp to the last st, 3ESC in the last st. Turn. 20 sts + ch2 center-ch-sp
- Row 4: Ch1, (1ESC, PM, ch1, PM, 1ESC) in the 1st st, ch1, sk 1 st, *1ESC through the FLO of the next st, ch1, sk 1 st*; rep from * to * to the center-ch-sp, (1ESC, ch2, PM, 1ESC) in the center-ch-sp, ch1, sk 1 st; rep from * to * to the last st, (1ESC, ch1, PM, 1ESC, PM) in the last st. Turn. 14 sts + 12 ch-1-sp + 1 ch-2-center-sp
- Rep Rows 3 and 4 to your desired shawl measurement, ending with Row 3. For a lovely finishing touch, follow the shawl edging pattern below.
EDGING:
- Row 5: Ch1, slst in the 1st st, ch2, sk 1 st, *slst in the next st, ch2, sk 1 st*; rep from * to * to the center-ch-sp, (1slst, ch2, 1slst) in the center-ch-sp, ch2, sk 1 st; rep from * to * to the last st, slst in the last st. Turn.
- Row 6: Ch1, slst in the 1st st, ch2, *slst in the ch-2-sp, ch2*; rep from * to * across to the last st, slst in the last st.
- Fasten off and weave in all ends.
