Cozy Handmade Socks (free *sewing* pattern)
Winter is still very much surviving and thriving! We still have snow, the floors are freezing, and somehow no one in my house can ever find matching socks… So naturally, I decided to just make them. Not store bought socks, but matching handmade socks instead. I made a pair for me and a pair for my daughter, and they quickly became the socks we keep reaching for first! They’re soft, warm, and honestly feel extra cozy knowing they came from fabric in my stash instead of a multipack at the department store. If you’ve never considered sewing socks, I promise they are far less complicated than they look! They’re quick, satisfying, and a really great beginner sewing project. Let’s make some cozy socks!
MATERIALS:
- Clover Rotary Cutter (60 mm)
- Clover Flower Pins
- Clover Wonder Clips
- Clover Metal Hera with Stylus
- 1/2 yard stretch knit fabric per pair
- Ellie & Mac Sock Pattern (FREE)
TUTORIAL:
1) Cut the pattern out using the Clover Rotary Cutter (60 mm) I love using the Clover Flower Pins to hold pattern pieces in place. Place Back Bottom and Back Top RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, matching the curved edge. Use Clover Wonder Clips to hold in place.
2) Sew between the notches, using a serger or zig-zag stitch. Open the Back piece, as shown, and place it RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER with the Front piece. Match the curved and flat edges, and pin or clip together, as shown. You will need to stretch the Back piece to fit the Front. This will help to eliminate fabric bunching at the heel. Sew, using a serger or zig zag stitch. Repeat steps for the other Sock.
3) Fold Bands RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER and pin or clip the short, raw edge. I love using the Clover Metal Hera with Stylus when sewing smaller pieces. Sew, using a serger or zig-zag stitch.
4) Fold Band in half WRONG SIDES TOGETHER. Divide Band and Sock opening into two equal parts and mark with pins or clips. With RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, insert Sock Into Band, aligning raw edges. Pin or clip together. Sew, using your preferred stretch stitch. Repeat for other Sock.
Told you it would be simple enough!! 🙂 I hope you had fun making this project and be sure to tag Clover’s and my accounts on social media if you decide to make these cozy socks!
