Hello, it’s Duana with @duana_m_chandler and @duanastudio and I am excited to share this baby gown pattern that I found in my sewing stash. I recently had a baby and have been looking for easy things that I can make her during this Fall season. I really like this pattern because it’s easy and you really don’t need a pattern to make it, but it helps! I love this baby gown for my daughter as an outfit that she can sleep in. It makes changing her overnight also easier. Win win win! Instead of going through all of the instructions due to copyright reasons, I’ll share some tips while working with stretch fabric. Let’s get started!
MATERIALS:
- Clover Rotary Cutter (60 mm) – 40% OFF FOR A LIMITED TIME!
- Clover Flower Pins
- Clover Wonder Clips – 40% OFF FOR A LIMITED TIME!
- McCall’s M8265 Sewing Pattern
- 1 yard jersey/4-way stretch fabric
- fabric weights
TUTORIAL:
1) When cutting stretchy fabric, one of the BEST tools that I have used is a rotary cutter and the Clover Rotary Cutter is a very sharp tool to cut through your stretch fabric and resulting in clean edges. It is fantastic with curves and faster than any scissors. I used the Clover Wonder Clips on folded edges to hold the pattern and fabric weights to help keep the fabric in place.
2) When sewing on the neck binding, I used the Clover Wonder Clips, which are great for sewing onto areas that are narrower. It did a great job at keeping the neck binding in place. When sewing on your machine, you can use a zig-zag stitch or you can use a longer stitch. I opted to use the longer stitch because the baby gown is smaller than the average adult size outfit and I didn’t want the zig-zag to take over the entire binding area.
3) When attaching the front gown to the back gown and the sleeve, I used the Clover Flower Pins because it is a great tool for holding together larger areas of fabric.
4) When sewing the tail of the gown, the Wonder Clips were great because I had to create a narrow hem. These clips are just great for precision and keeps your fabric from distorting when sewing.
5) Lastly, I created a bow. I used a 16” x 4” rectangle for the headband, a 3” x 3” square for the knot, and a 6” x 10” rectangle for the bow.
Well, here you have it! The gown and bow is complete 🙂 If you are looking to gift someone a baby gown and bow this fall/holiday season, this pattern is perfect. It is easy enough that you can also create your own, but if you are new to sewing clothes, getting an easy sewing pattern can help build your confidence. I hope that the sewing with knits tips are helpful. Happy Stitching!
