The “All Day Summer Hat!”

Hi! My name is Elisa from @stringsandcuddles on IG! So we definitelyyy need some sort of protection from the harsh heat now that summer has arrived….When we’re embarking on our enjoyable activities, we have to put on sunscreen, our coziest clothes, and don’t forget, your NEW stylish summer hat! This is my source of inspiration for the new pattern I’m sharing today 🙂 I would like to introduce to you my newest design: the All-Day Summer Hat! Whether you’re heading to the beach, taking a stroll in the park, running errands, or anywhere you want to go have fun, this hat is exactly what you need! Being packable and portable, this gorgeous hat is convenient to travel with you wherever you go. So without further ado, let’s get started with the pattern!

 

NOTES:

  • Read the pattern carefully before starting.
  • This pattern is worked from the top (crown) down (brim), in the round. Each round is joined with a slip stitch.
  • Asterisks * * repeat instructions between asterisks as many times as directed or repeat at specified locations.

  • GAUGE: Rows 1 – 7 = 4 inches (in diameter)
  • SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate
  • FINISHED MEASUREMENT: Fits most adult sizes, approximately 10” (bodywidth) X 9.5” (height) or 15” (brim – width) X 9.5” (height)

  • MR: magic ring
  • rep: repeat
  • SC: single crochet
  • slst(s): slip stitch(es)
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • SPSC: spike single crochet – insert the hook into the st 2 rows below, pull up a loop to the height of just above the top edge of the current row, yarn over, and pull through 2 loops.
  • SCWE: single crochet wrap edging – insert the hook into the st, yarn over, and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), wrap yarn around all loops on the hook twice counter-clockwise, yarn over, and pull through 2 loops. I am not really sure of the name of this stitch, so if you happen to know the right name of this stitch pattern, please let me know. Thanks!

 

PATTERN STARTS HERE!

CROWN:

  • Round 1: Start with a MR. Ch 1 (does not count as a st throughout), 8 SC into the ring and pull tight the yarn tail to close the ring. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 8 sts
  • Round 2: Ch 1, 2 SC in each st around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 16 sts
  • Round 3: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 24 sts

  • Round 4: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next st*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 32 sts
  • Round 5: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next 2 sts*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 40 sts
  • Round 6: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next 3 sts*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 48 sts
  • Round 7: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next 4 sts*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 56 st

  • Round 8: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next 5 sts*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 64 sts

  • Round 10: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next 7 sts*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 80 sts
  • Round 11: Ch 1, 2 SC in the 1st st, SPSC in the next st, *2 SC in the next st, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next 8 sts*; Rep from * to * around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 88 sts. At this point, the crown measures approximately 6.5” in diameter.

BODY:

  • Round 12: Ch 1, 1 SC in the 1st st, *SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the next 10 sts*; Rep from * to * to the last 10 sts, 1 SPSC in the next st, 1 SC in the last 9 sts. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 88 sts

EDGING:

  • Round 46: Ch 1, SCWE in each st around. Slst in the 1st st to close the round. – 144 sts. Refer to the photo tutorial below on how to do the SCWE.
Single Crochet Wrap Edging – (1) insert the hook into the st, yarn over, and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook), (2) wrap yarn around all loops on hook counter-clockwise, (3) wrap yarn around all loops on hook counter-clockwise for the second time, (4) yarn over, and pull through 2 loops.

Fasten off and weave in the ends. You are all done and ready to have fun all day long with your lovely and stylish summer hat!
