Twisted Cable Beanie: Tunisian Crochet Pattern

Hello yarn friends! I’m Alex, the crochet and Tunisian crochet designer behind With Alex. I’m so happy to be back on the Clover Blog today with a new, Tunisian crochet pattern and video tutorial! The Twisted Cable Beanie is full of beautiful cables and it’s a lot of fun to make. All you need is a second crochet hook! Scroll down for the pattern.

The cables for this hat were inspired by all the beautiful, cabled hats I see in my favorite winter and holiday movies. I think this beanie would be a perfect accessory in any one of my favorite snowy, winter movies.

The Twisted Cable Beanie is crocheted flat, bottom up. After decreasing, the hole at the top is closed and then the back of the hat is seamed. A mattress seam can be used to create an invisible seam, making the cables flow beautifully around this beanie.

This pattern uses two hooks from the Clover Interchangeable Tunisian Crochet Hook Set and one cord and stopper. First, the size H 5.00 mm hook is used for the brim of the hat and then the cord is switched to a size J 6.00 mm hook for the body of the hat. The size H 5.00 mm hook can then be used to make the twisted cables when needed throughout the pattern.

Pearls or beads can be added to give this beanie an elegant touch and the instructions on how to add pearls/ beads are in the pattern below. The pearls are easily added with a Clover Amour Steel Crochet Hook as you crochet so no counting and pre-stringing the pearls before starting the project!

Designed with Universal Yarn Uptown Worsted or made with other suitable worsted weight yarns, this beanie is super warm and great for any winter activity that you have planned!

Wear it for ice skating, sledding, walking through the snow, or just wear it on super cold days when you wish it would snow. It’s also a wonderful hat to wear for normal everyday activities when the weather is cold. It’s only September but I’m already wearing mine in the early weekday mornings before my child goes to school.

The cables pop and are super squishy, making the texture amazing, but fun to create. The Twisted Cable Beanie also makes a wonderful gift for any occasion.

This beanie is one size fits most adults and it will stretch to 23 inches.

Let’s get started!

Notes And Other Tutorials

  • This pattern is worked flat with the right side of the work facing.
  • At the beginning of each row, the first stitch is on the hook and counts as a Tunisian knit stitch.
  • To finish this hat, you will close the hole at the top of the hat and then seam up the back.
  • The circumference of the hat will be smaller than the finished width after it is seamed.
  • There is a gauge for this hat but there are also measurements throughout the pattern.
  • The Size H 5.00 mm tunisian hook is used to start this hat and it is also used as the second crochet hook during the cable rows.

How To Finish The Brim and Start The Body:

R6: Forward Pass:

*chain 1 (image 1), tss2tog sl st (image 3). Repeat from the * across until 1 stitch remains (image 4), insert the hook behind the last two vertical bars (image 5), yarn over and pull through the loops on the hook (image 6).

chain 1 (image 1), turn the work so that the bottom is now the top (image 2), slip stitch up the side (into the end of each row) six times (image 3).

How To Add Pearls Or Beads:

R11, R17, R23, & R29.

Insert the hook into the next stitch (image 2), put a pearl on the small hook (image 3), yarn over the small hook with the working yarn (image 4), pull through the pearl and pull a loop (image 5), take the small hook out of the loop made (image 6), put the main hook through the loop made (image 7), and pull through the stitch making sure the pearl pops through.
