Hi everyone it’s Molly Uhl from Lou Loops Co. I created this sweet retro drawstring purse with my little girls in mind. They love toting around all of their treasures. This could absolutely be used by any adult with an adjustment to the strap length.
Materials:
Clover Crochet Amour Hook in size I (5.5 mm), tapestry needle as needed, scissors, a stitch marker (a scrap of yarn works), and medium weight yarn in any color(s) of your choice.
Stitches:
Chain (ch), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), bobble, slip stitch (ss)
This project is mostly worked in a continuous round – Stitch markers are helpful
Purse
Round 1: Make a magic ring, or chain 2 with 10 hdc into the second chain from the hook.
Round 2: 2 hdc in each stitch around (20 stitches).
Round 3: 2 hdc in the first stitch, and 1 hdc in the next stitch and repeat around (30 stitches).
Round 4: 2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, and repeat around (40 stitches).
Round 5: 2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, and repeat around (50 stitches).
Round 6: 2 hdc in the first stitch, 1 hdc in each of the next 4 stitches, and repeat around (60 stitches).
Rounds 7-20: Hdc in each stitch around. Using a stitch marker is helpful to keep from losing your place. I just use a scrap piece of yarn as a stitch marker.
Round 21: Hdc in each stitch around, and JOIN with a slip stitch.
Round 22: For this row we will make a bobble stitch in every other stitch (skipping a stitch in between). To create the bobble: yarn over, insert hook, pull up a loop, yarn over, insert hook, pull up another loop, and then yarn over, insert hook, and pull up a loop. You should have 7 loops on your hook. Yarn over, and pull through the first 6 loops on your hook, yarn over, and pull through the final 2 loops on your hook. Chain 1, skip the next stitch, and bobble in the following stitch. Repeat around. Aer the final bobble, do not chain. Join with a slip stitch.
Round 23-25: Hdc in each stitch around (60 stitches), do NOT join.
Round 26: Hdc in each stitch around (60 stitches). Join with a slip stitch. Tie off leaving a long tail for weaving, and weave in any ends, and make sure your bag is facing the preferred side out.
Drawstring
You can just use a heavy weight thick yarn, or crochet a drawstring. Weave the string in and out of your bobble stitch row/round (22).
Strap
Note: Leave long tails and ends for sewing the strap to the bag
Child size strap
Row 1: Chain 121. Double crochet in the second ch from the hook, and in each stitch aer (120).
Row 2: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in each stitch across (120).
Sew each side of the strap to the inside of the bag, about 3?4 of an inch deep. Tie off and weave in the ends.
This strap fits a child. Adjust the amount of chains to reflect the length you need. I would recommend chaining about 171 for an adult length strap and 101 for a toddler.
Add optional details like flowers or other appliques of your choice!
Crochet Daisy:
– Using yellow medium weight yarn, make a magic circle or chain 2 with 9 scs. Join with a slip stitch. Attach a new color to make the petals.
– All in the first stitch: Chain 2, 2 dc, ch 2, and slip stitch. Ch 2 and skip a stitch.
– In the following stitch, work 2 dc, ch 2, and ss. Repeat until you have 5 petals. Leave a long tail for sewing onto your project.
Use different hook sizes to adjust the size of the daisies.
