Capiz Shell Decoration – Crochet Pattern
Hello! It’s Jennifer Ryan, the designer and blogger behind Celtic Knot Crochet. I am excited to be sharing another crochet project here on the Clover blog!
This quick and easy project uses a small amount of yarn and some interesting craft supplies to make a unique and beachy decoration you can give as a gift or hang in your home this summer!
Capiz shells are used to make a variety of seaside décor – they make a soothing sound when in a windchime and have a beautiful soft glow when the sun shines through them. This project puts a Capiz shell piece front and center in a crocheted flower.
Let’s get started!
Skill Level: Easy
Supplies:
Size 3 Cotton crochet thread – 1 skein (small amount)
C (2.75mm) Clover Amour Crochet hook- Art No. 1041/C
Capiz Shell piece (1 5/8” diameter) – There are many suppliers of these shells on-line and you can easily find them in a wide variety of colors
Embroidery needle (or yarn needle with small eye)
Driftwood (approximately 5” across) – I found my driftwood pieces at my local craft store but you can also find some on a beach! Drill a small hole in the center (or you can tie the hanger on around the wood instead)
3 faceted beads
1 wooden bead
1 large acrylic teardrop bead (1 ½” long)
Hot glue gun and glue sticks (or craft glue)
Finished Measurements: Flower =3” diameter; Entire decoration approx. 8-9 inches long
Gauge: 12 sc = 2”
Abbreviations:
YO (yarn over)
Hk (hook)
Lp (loop)
Ch (chain)
St (stitch)
Sp (space)
Sc (single crochet)
Sl st (slip stitch)
Tr (treble crochet)
Back bar of the chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides
Notes:
First flower petals and a single row of single crochet are crocheted
Then the crocheted pieces are glued to the Capiz shell
Lastly all the beads and the driftwood are attached to form decoration

Instructions:
Flower Petals
Ch 25
Row 1: Working in the back bar of the chain (Click here to watch a short video tutorial of this technique) sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Fasten off. Do not turn.
Row 2: With Right Side facing of Row 1, join with sl st in 1st sc; (ch 4, 2 tr in same st, 2 tr in next st, ch 4, sl st in same st, sl st in each of next 2 sts) across. Fasten off. (8 petals)
Back Cord
Ch 31
Working in the back bar of the chain, sc in 2nd ch from hk and in each ch across. Fasten off. (30 sc)
Assembly:
Glue petals to edge of Capiz shell piece
Glue back cord on back side of flower covering up the edge of the shell piece
Weave in all ends and use yarn tails to join where the first and last petals meet and where both ends of the back cord meet leaving one long yarn tail at top of flower intact
Thread on beads making double knot in between each and then thread on driftwood using photo as a guide
Tie top of yarn tail into a knot and thread short end back through driftwood piece – trim off excess (If you don’t have a hole in your driftwood, tie the yarn around the driftwood and knot in place; Then tie the top loop for hanging)
Cut a 15” piece of yarn and thread through hole in top of teardrop bead until one end matches up with other yarn end
Add one more bead on both lengths of yarn putting more double knots in between – see photo as a guide
Join this bead element to the bottom center of flower on back side – weave in yarn tail ends
Now your Capiz Shell Decoration is complete and ready to hang in a bright window!
