Cute Tree Coaster

Hi everyone! I’m Amber and I’m the designer behind Divine Debris and I love to crochet but, as much as I hate to admit it, I’m not big on decorating for Christmas. I’m someone who loves Halloween so when it’s time again to transition into decorating for other holidays, it’s always a bit hard for me. So I like to ease into it with cute little things here and there and in my house, that means home decor.

Coasters are one of my favorite ways to add crochet to my home (or they make a great gift, just ask my mom who gets some of my crochet samples). They work up fast and usually take so little yarn they’re fantastic stash busters. And one of my favorite things about them, just toss them right into the washer when you spill coffee on one (perhaps that’s just something I tend to do, a lot). Now who’s ready for a little holiday cheer?

For this pattern it’s all about the single crochets. And if you can make a sc and change colors, you can totally make this. I like to work simple color changes like this with 3 strands of yarn (2 cream and one green) so that as I’m working across the row I’m dropping the color as a pick up a new one. It’s not that I don’t like to carry yarn, but for a simple design like this it’s not necessary (in my opinion) and it keeps the carried yarn from peeking through (makes the tree really pop don’t ya think?). Just make sure to keep your yarn tension even while you’re changing colors and you’ll be golden.

And with the decorations on the tree itself, that’s where you get to be creative. Feel free to add a garland with surface crochet or even fabric paint (I’ve used Puffy Paint before and it works up so well). This is another fun opportunity to get creative on these coasters, and it barely uses any yarn so you can weave some ends from other projects in there as cute little ornaments. I bet that would be super cute.

Materials

• Amour Crochet Hook G (4.0mm) – Art. No 1045/G
• Worsted weight/ size #4 yarn
  • 2 – 4 colors
  • Less than .5 oz/ 26 yds ea
• Notions: scissors, measuring tape, yarn needle

 

Gauge

• 18 sc x 19 rows = 4”

 

Terms/stitches Used

• RS: Right side
• Ch: Chain
• St: Stitch
• Sc: Single crochet

 

Notes

• This coaster is worked from the bottom up in rows, with a ch and turn at the beginning of each row. You work the coaster itself first, then add the border, and last the decorations for the Tree.
• The ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.
• Blocking is suggested for this pattern.
• This whole pattern is worked in sc, so the instructions will only tell you the number and the color; ie: “A35” means sc 35 times in color A.
• The even rows are the RS.
• In the photos: Color A is cream (Basic Stitch by Lion Brand Yarn in Ecru), color B is green (Basic Stitch in Grass), color C is red or blue (Basic Stitch in Red Heather or Royal Blue), and color D is yellow (Basic Stitch in Mustard).

Finishing
Border

With the RS facing you, create a slipknot on your hook (this will make your first st a standing sc) with color C and start on the other side of Row 1 (the ch row).

Row 1: Sc into the next 17 sts, ch 1 at the corner, rotate your piece, sc into the next 20 row ends, ch 1 at the corner, rotate your piece, sc into the next 17 sts (this will be Row 20), ch 1 at the corner, rotate your piece, sc into the next 20 row ends, ch 1 at the corner, join with a slip st — 74 sc, 4 ch-1 spaces

Fasten off, weave in your ends. Block if you’d like.

 

Tree Decorations
Use color C, create garland by going back and forth from the front to the back of the coaster across the tree (with your yarn needle) . Then use color D to create a little star on the top of the Tree . You can also use Puffy Paint or any other type of fabric paint that will be visible.
