Sewing a Sunglasses Case

Summer is only a couple weeks away! As we get ever closer to fun in the sun, a little prep work is needed to make summer ’21 the best one yet! I have a feeling that most of us will want to have as much outside time as possible this year, and with that comes sun protection. Everyone knows sunscreen is a staple for your bag, but don’t forget about your shades! To help you remember to pack them, why not whip up a quick and easy case to store your favorite pair in?

Let’s get started.

Supplies:

Prepare Fabric:

To begin, iron all fabric flat. On both fabrics, measure and mark out a rectangle that is 4 1/2” wide by 19 1/2” long. Cut out rectangles. On the lining fabric only, measure and mark out a rectangle that is 2” wide and 6” long.  Cut out rectangle.

Trim Flap Point:

On one 4 1/2” end of outer and liner fabric mark the 2 1/4” point. Mark a point 2” down from edge on both 19 1/2” sides. Mark diagonal lines from side points to middle point. Cut off corners. Refer to the photos below.

Prepare Strap:

Take 2” by 6” rectangle and fold in half lengthwise, right sides together if applicable. Sew sides together with 1/4” seam allowance against raw edges and using a straight stitch with a short stitch length.  Turn tube right side out. Iron flat. Sew straight stitch down the middle of the strap. Iron once more.

Sew Panels Together:

Place panels flat together with right sides facing in. Place strap between panels 2” down from 4 1/2”  side without diagonal cuts. Clip all around panels to secure together. Sew panels together with 1/4”’ seam allowance and a straight stitch with a short stitch length. Be sure to backstitch when starting and finishing, leaving a 2” space for turning work.

Turn and Iron:

Once the panels are stitched together, trim excess strap off and snip all corners and points for better turning. Turn fabric right side out, making sure to have crisp corner points. Bring to the ironing board and press edges flat with fingers first before ironing, making sure all sides have been turned out to their limit. Iron fabric flat.

Outer Stitching:

Sew 4 1/2” edge using 1/4” seam allowance and a straight stitch with a short stitch length. Fold over fabric 7” with lining together leaving approximately 4 1/2” of pointed flap uncovered. Refer to the photos below. Clip panels together. Sew around the entire edge of the sunglasses case using seam allowance and stitching as previously stated.

Finishing:

Snip all excess threads and press flat with iron while the flap is open. Fold over flap and press along the edge for a crease to keep lap down while not secure under the strap.

We’ve completed our sunglasses case! The magic of this project is how fast it can come together, and how little fabric it uses. You can dive into your scraps pile and whip up a handful for you and your friends in an evening easily! Be sure to tag Clover and me in your finished cases, we’d love to see your take on it!
