The Harvest Shawl – Crochet Pattern

Hello Friends! It’s Dani, the designer, and blogger behind Danii’s Ways & CJ Design

Today’s pattern is this beautiful shawl, perfect to transition between seasons.

The original design was made using Fingering weight yarn, which makes it perfect for spring-summer!

The good thing about this pattern is that you can use any kind of yarn, I would say, all the way from Fingering weight up to DK or Worsted. You can totally use Bulky or Super Bulky but you would end up with a very chunky shawl.

This shawl features a few different kinds of stitches, very pretty yet simple to make.

The construction of this shawl is what can confuse some of you, so I would highly recommend learning all the basic stitches before starting this pattern, also not mandatory but I would suggest you learn how to read a crochet chart.

The color combinations for this shawl are endless and I can’t even imagine how beautiful it would look made out of hand-dyed yarn!

Now let’s talk about the crochet hook sizes.

In the original design, I used Fingering weight (as I mentioned before) and I used a 4 mm crochet hook.

This is because using a larger size hook, will give your garment a very nice drip, very airy and flowy if that makes sense.

So whatever crochet hook your yarn calls for, go up 1 or 2 sizes to get this very nice and flowy look.

Otherwise, your project will turn out very stiff, tight, and heavy.

These are my recommendations but of course, you can do and adjust however you prefer.

Stitches you should know:

  • Chain
  • Half Double Crochet
  • Double Crochet
  • Bubble Stitch
  • Increases

Materials:

  • 200 grams (or more) of your favorite yarn (Fingering weight or DK would be my recommendation)
  • A crochet hook 1 size or 2 larger than what the yarn calls for. For the original pattern, I used Amour Crochet Hook Size G (4 mm) – Art. No 1045/G
  • Tapestry Needle – Art. No 219
  • Scissors – Art. No 493/CW
  • Stitch Marker (optional) – Art. No 3033
  • Tassel Maker (optional) – Art. No 9941

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • CH – Chain
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • DC – Double Crochet
  • BS – Bubble Stitch
  • INC – Increase (two stitches together)
  • ST – Stitch (es)

Pattern:

This is an asymmetric shawl, the construction is simple but you have to pay special attention to the increases. We will be increasing from one side of the shawl only, the other side will grow straight.

Note: The Chain 3 from every row will count as the first stitch.

Row 1: CH 3, DC in the first CH (2)

Row 2: CH 3, INC in the same space as the chains, DC (4)

Row 3: CH 3, DC in the next 2 ST, INC (5)

Row 4: CH 3, INC in the same space as the chains, DC 4  (7)

Row 5: CH 3, DC 5, INC in the last stitch (8)

Row 6: CH 3, INC, in the same space as the chains, DC 7  (10)

Row 7: CH 3, DC 8, INC in the last stitch  (11)

Row 11: CH 3, DC  14, INC in the last stitch (17)

Row 12: CH 3, INC in the same space as the chains, DC 16  (19)
