Celtic Knot Coaster – Wonder Knitter & Crochet Project

Hello! It’s Jennifer Ryan, the designer and blogger behind Celtic Knot Crochet. I am excited to be sharing the Celtic Knot Coaster project here on the Clover blog!

I love to combine Celtic Knots with crochet and with St. Patrick’s Day coming up, I thought this was the perfect project to make using Clover’s Wonder Knitter and other helpful supplies. You’ll see that it is a very easy project that uses simple stitches and a small amount of yarn.

I’ll take you through each step of the project and you’ll even be able to watch a video tutorial to help you use the Wonder Knitter and weave the Celtic Knot. Let’s get started.

The project is broken down into 3 major steps overall, and instructions within each step. The three major steps are as follows:

  • Step 1: Create 2 cords (using the Wonder Knitter)
  • Step 2: Weave cords into Celtic Knot (using a knot diagram)
  • Step 3: Edge knot with crochet stitches

Skill Level:

Easy

Supplies:

Note: supplies are listed by what you will need for each step.

Step 1 & 3:

  • Wonder Knitter – Art. No 3101
  • 3 skeins Size 3 (DK weight) cotton yarn – Pick 2 colors that look great together and help to highlight each part of the knot and one more color that would frame the knot well (for the crocheted edging – I used Sinfonia by Omega in a dark and light green and white)
  • Measuring Tape
  • Scissors – view Clover’s collection
  • Crochet Hook F (3.75mm) – Art. No 1044/F or Art. No 1006/F

Step 2 (Knot Weaving Supplies):

  • Corkboard or foam core board (1/4” thick and about 8” square)
  • Print-out of Knot Diagram (so that guide line measures 2”)
  • Pin and Stow (magnetic wristband) – Art. No 9575
  • Flower Pins – Art. No 2506
  • Jumbo Tapestry Needles – Art. No 340

Finished Measurements:

  • Celtic Knot  = 5 ½” (across widest part)
  • Coaster with edging: 6” across; 6 ½” corner to corner

Gauge:

Gauge is not necessary for this project as long as you make the cords the length stated in the pattern

Abbreviations:

  • Ch (chain)
  • Sc (single crochet)
  • Sl st (slip stitch)
  • Dc (double crochet)

Special Stitches:

Join with sc = With starting slip knot on hk, insert hk into st, YO, draw up a lp, YO, pull through 2 lps on hk

Ch-2 picot = Ch 2, sl st in left-side of previous sc (by inserting hook through center of stitch)

Notes:

First 2 cords are made with the Wonder Knitter

Then these 2 cords are woven into the Celtic Knot

Lastly the knot is edged with 3 rounds of crochet stitches

Instructions:

Step 1:

Make 2 cords with the Wonder Knitter

Dark Green cord should be 24.5” long

Light Green cord should be 11” long

Here’s how to use the Wonder Knitter:

[If you would rather watch a video of these steps, please head on over to my YouTube channel here (video also shown below) to learn how to use this neat gadget!]

(I will be abbreviating the Wonder Knitter with the letters, “WK” throughout)

Set-up

1:  Insert yarn down through center of the WK

2:  Wrap end of yarn around pinky as hold WK in hand

3:  Wrap yarn clockwise around one prong so that crossing is on the inside of the WK

4: Wrap yarn around other prongs in same manner following direction of the arrow

5:  Thread yarn through guide

6: Hold working end of yarn under fingers while holding the WK

Making Stitches

1:  With working yarn above loop on first prong, insert green hook into loop

2:  Carry loop over working yarn and over top of prong; release/drop loop inside WK

3: Using thumb rotate prongs to the left (clockwise) so that working yarn is positioned above loop on next prong

Repeat 1-3 until cord measures desired length

Removing Cord

1:  Cut working yarn about 8” from last prong

2:  With working yarn above loop on next prong, insert green hook up through loop on prong

3:  Grab working yarn with green hook and pull down through loop on prong

Repeat 2 & 3 around 5 more times (so all prong loops have been worked)

4:  Using green hook carefully remove all loops on prongs

5:  Pull yarn tail to tighten knot at end of cord

Step 2: Weaving Celtic Knot

[If you would rather watch a video of these steps, please head on over to my YouTube channel here (video also shown below) to see the knot weaving in action]

1: Print out Celtic Knot Diagram and pin to corkboard

2:  Pin end of Dark Green cord to star on diagram

3:  Following the arrows lay cord along green path on diagram pinning as you go and making sure to correctly pass either over or under the cord

4: Pin end of Light Green cord to triangle on diagram

5:  Lay cord along white path on diagram pinning as you go and making sure to correctly pass either over or under the dark green cord

6:  Pin all crossings and remove knot from corkboard

7: With tapestry needle and matching yarn sew all crossings making sure stitching does not show on Right Side

Step 3: Adding a crochet edging

Round 1: Using “sc marks” on diagram (see arrows in photo) and white yarn, join with a sc at A; Continue to use these marks to check where to place the next sc all throughout this round;

[Ch 5, sc in dark green cord loop, ch 5, sc in dark green loop, ch 5;

(Sc in light green cord, ch 3) 2 times; sc in light green cord] around ending with a dc in 1st sc. (see photo of completed Round 1)

Round 2: *(Ch 6, sc in next ch-5 sp) 3 times; ch 6, sc in center sc of next light green cord section*; Repeat from * to * around ending with sl st in 1st ch. (see photo of completed Round 2)

Round 3: Ch 1; (3 sc, ch-2 picot, 3 sc) in each ch-6 sp around; join with sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off. (See arrow in photo pointing to side of sc & other photo of completed stitches in ch-6 sp)
