- Amour Crochet Hook – 5 mm – (Art. No 1047/H)
- 200 yards of worsted weight yarn such as Lion Brand Re-tweed (This pattern uses 2 colors – 100 yards of each)
- Darning Needle Set (Art. No 339)
- Mini Patchwork Scissors (Art. No 493/CW)

Abbreviations:
- ch: chain
- chs: chains
- st: stitch
- sts: stitches
- sc: single crochet
- yo: yarn over
- sl st: slip stitch
- MC: main color
- CC: contrasting color
Gauge:
13 sts x 16 rows in 4” x 4 ” of sc
Notes:
- This pattern is written in American Standard Terms.
- Ch 1 doesn’t count as a stitch.
- Make sure to keep yarn on the wrong side when joining/changing to new color yarn.
- Use bobbins or clothespins (wrap each color yarn on them) for each color section. Or you could use 4 skeins of yarn at the same time.
- When changing color: don’t finish working the last sc. When you have two loops on the hook – grab another color yarn and pull it through these two loops.
- Each row will have 52 sc sts. You will work 48 rows total.
- Refer to the chart below for easier color reference.
Instructions:
Using MC Ch 53
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in next 21 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 18 sts, turn.
Row 2: ch 1, sc 18 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC sc 22 sts, turn.
Row 3: ch 1, sc 22 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 18 sts, turn.
Row 4: ch 1, sc 18 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC sc 22 sts, turn.
Row 5-20: repeat rows 3-4.
Change to CC.
Row 21: ch 1, sc 22 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC, sc 18 sts, turn.
Row 22: ch 1, sc 18 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 22 sts, turn.
Row 23-28: repeat rows 21-22.
Change to MC.
Row 29: ch 1, sc 22 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 18 sts, turn.
Row 30: ch 1, sc 18 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC sc 22 sts, turn.
Row 31-36: repeat rows 29-30.
Change to CC.
Row 37: ch 1, sc 22 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC, sc 18 sts, turn.
Row 38: ch 1, sc 18 sts, change to CC, sc 6 sts, change to MC, sc 6 sts, change to CC, sc 22 sts, turn.
Row 39-48: repeat rows 37-38.
Finish off after row 48. Weave in all the ends.
Edging: Join in the corner with MC.
Row 1: Sc along each side making sure to sc 3 in each corner of the placemat. When working long sides (sts sides) – sc in each st. When working short sides (sides of rows) – sc in every other row to make sure the sts don’t look crowded. Sl st to first sc.
Row 2: ch 1, *sl st, ch 1* around, join to first st of this row.
Block the placemat.
