Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch with Dori Troutman

Hello Sewing Friends!

I’m so excited to be here today to tell you more about the Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot.  I used this for a really fun half square triangle pillow cover a few months ago and I was absolutely in love with it.  So I’ve been eager to share more about this presser foot.

I’d like to address a few questions that I’ve had from my Instagram readers when I’ve posted pictures using the presser foot:

  1.  Does this foot work on all sewing machines?  On the description of the packaging of this tool it says, “presser foot may require your specific sewing machine companies’ specialty adapter.  Not compatible with all machines.”  However, I will say this.  It is for low shank sewing machines and it fits both my Juki and my Janome machines.
  2. Is this foot a walking foot?  It is not.  It may not be a foot that you would want to use on a large quilt.  But it is fantastic on smaller projects.  I’ve used it on a larger lap size quilt, a baby quilt, and especially for all my small straight-line quilting projects and it works like a dream.
  3. Does this foot work for free motion quilting?  No it doesn’t. It is meant for parallel line and straight line stitching. However, it does manage curves beautifully.

Now I’m excited to tell you all about my experience using this awesome tool.

If this foot is compatible with your sewing machine, it attaches just like any other foot. Super simple and self explanatory.

Although this foot is not a walking foot, it does glide really smoothly. It is made of a poly-carbonate product that is slick and so the foot doesn’t bind up on your fabric at all. I practiced sewing through multiple quilting layers and never had any problem with skipping stitches or wavy lines from the fabric binding up.

And now… my favorite part!  This presser foot has this amazing stitch alignment ruler attached. You can adjust the ruler to the width that you want your stitching lines simply by squeezing the tabs and sliding the ruler.  It will adjust from 3/8 inch width all the way to 3 inches. The edge of the foot itself is 1/4 inch.

One thing that is really great is that once you choose your width and you release the little tabs, it actually locks in to that spot. So there is no slipping of the ruler guide and changing your width mid-seam.

Sew your first stitch line; either by following a seam or on a pre-marked line. After you’ve established your first stitching line, then you will set your stitch line width by laying the ruler edge on your previously marked seam, and adjusting the width as you would like.

One thing that is really fun with the Ultimate Quilt ‘n Stitch Presser Foot is to do a lot of quilting lines of different widths. You can adjust the ruler to any width you like, line up your alignment guide with one of the stitching lines previously sewn and just sew!  It is actually really fun.

You can see on the back of this simple potholder I made how consistent the sewing lines are.

The edge of the foot itself is a perfect 1/4 inch so that is great when your stitching lines are closer than 3/8 inch apart.

Probably one of the best things about this foot though is how you can sew perfect circular stitching lines. I marked one circle in the middle of the fabric and used that for the guide to sew all the other circles. You can use the guide to sew along the outside of the circle as pictured above.

Or you can use the guide to sew along the inside of a tight circle. Either way, you will end up with perfectly spaced circles every single time!

I love this presser foot! I think it might be my new favorite Clover product!
