Knitted Pom-Pom Flower

Designed by Carol Mesimer

This little flower will add a cheerful touch anyplace you put it. A bit of yarn, a wooden dowel and a flowerpot or vase are all that’s needed.

This would be a great project for a beginner knitter. Those with more experience will enjoy perking up a desk or kitchen window with this fun project. Make one or an entire windowsill of blossoms to brighten your day, or the day of someone you love.

Gather these supplies…

Tools

  • 1 skein green worsted weight yarn for stem and leaves
  • 1 skein red worsted weight yarn for pom pom
  • 72” of crochet thread
  • 1 3/16” wooden dowel
  • 1 3” clay flower pot
  • Small pebbles or rounded glass chips

Abbreviations:

  • K2tog = knit two stitches together as one
  • Psso = pass slipped stitch over
  • Slip = move stitch from left hand needle to right hand needle without knitting

Here’s How:

Flower

With Takumi Knitting Needles

Use flower yarn to cast on 15 stitches. Knit 200 rows. Bind off. Use thread tail to sew short ends together.

Stem

Use green yarn to cast on 25 stitches. *Knit 1 row, purl 1 row.*

Repeat between * and * for a total of 6 rows. Check to make sure work will fit around the dowel. Adjust row count if necessary. Bind off.

Leaves

Use green yarn to make leaves. Make 5 leaves.

Leave a 12” tail at beginning for sewing.

Cast on 3 stiches. Knit 2 rows.

Kfb, k 1, kfb. Knit 1 row.

Kfb, k 3, kfb. Knit 3 rows.

K2tog, k 3, k2tog. Knit 1 row.

K2tog, k1, k2tog. Knit 1 row.

Slip 1st stitch, k2tog, psso.

End off. Bury yarn tail from ending.

Flower center

Use red yarn to make a 2.5” – 3” pom pom. Leave tails used to tie pom-pom 9” long. Trim pom-pom neatly.

Assembly

Use 36” of crochet thread to gather evenly along one long edge of the flower section. Pull snugly and tie off. With second piece of thread, gather approximately 1” from outer edge of flower. Do not tie off yet.

Place stem piece on dowel. Use thread tail of stem to sew up the long edges of the stem. Bury thread tails into stem.

Push tails of pom-pom through the gathered center of the flower. Sew to edges of the gathered flower center. Bury pom-pom tails into stem after stem is sewn to flower. Gather the second row of crochet thread up around the pom pom center. Adjust gathers of the flower. Tie off and bury thread tails.

Lay stem on the back of the flower, with the short seam along the stem. Using flower yarn, sew the flower inconspicuously to the stem. Bury yarn tail into stem.

With green yarn tails on leaves, sew leaves to the stem. Placement is optional. Place them the way you like them to look. Bury yarn tails into stem.

Place stem of flower into the center of the clay pot. Pour pebbles or glass chips in around the dowel to hold it in place. Push green stem down below the level of the chips.

Designers note: Only partial amounts of the yarn skeins were used. If you have small, leftover bits of yarn, it can be used to make flowers.
