Cherry Bag (T-shirt Yarn) crochet pattern

This Cherry Bag adds the perfect pop of color to your summer wardrobe! I had so much fun transforming a plain T-shirt into this accessory.

MATERIALS:

Clover Amour Hook (9 mm)
Clover Amour Hook (2.75 mm)
Clover Patchwork Scissors (small)
Clover Stitch Markers
Clover Yarn Needle
#7 jumbo yarn – T-shirt yarn (*Note: This pattern includes a tutorial on how to upcycle T-shirts into yarn for your project. You may use old T-shirts without graphic prints on them – or, you can use three XL cotton T-shirts. Here, I used the brand Gildan.)
- 260 g of one color
#3 light worsted cotton yarn
- 1 skein of Pink – 12 g
- 1 skein of Green – 3 g
magnetic closure
pliers
fiber fill stuffing
tweezers (to get into the narrow opening)
hot glue

This pattern is written in US terminology.
The pattern is worked in an oval spiral and in continuous rounds.
Difficulty: intermediate-beginner+
Measurements: 10 in. x 9 in. [~25 cm x ~23 cm] if crocheting using yarn under, yarn over (YUYO) and using the recommended materials.
Time: ~2 hr
Note: The bag will be assembled from the bottom up and is made in one piece. The strap will begin on one end of the purse and will be sewn onto the other end.

CHERRY BAG PATTERN:

Using your chosen color yarn with a 9 mm Clover Amour Hook:

Round 1: make a slipknot and ch 15, work into the second ch from the hook, sc into the next 13 ch, make 3 sc into the next ch, turn and work along the bottom of the ch, sc into the next 12 ch, inc into last ch and slst into the first st of the rnd [30]
- Note: The new rnd starts after the slst.

Round 2: (12 sc, 3 inc), repeat [36]
Round 3: (12 sc, [sc, inc] x3), repeat [42]
Round 4: (12 sc, [2 sc, inc] x3), repeat [48]
Rounds 5-12 (8 rounds total): sc all around [48]
Round 13: (12 sc, [2 sc, dec] x3), repeat [42]

Next, we will continue onto the strap.

Including the loop currently on the hook, count back 8 sts and mark it with a Clover Stitch Marker.

Round 1: work into the marked st, 8 sc [8]

Rounds 2-16 (15 rounds total): sc all around [8]
*Note: Modify the length as needed. I accounted for some stretching out over time, so I preferred a slightly shorter strap.

Fasten off and leave an 18 in. [~46 cm] yarn tail for sewing.

Flatten the body of the bag to clearly visualize where the strap will be sewn and use the Clover Stitch Markers to mark an 8 st space. There will be 14 sts between the straps.

Using the Clover Yarn Needle, sew the strap to the body of the bag.

Weave in the remaining ends.

CHERRY STEM:

In green yarn and with a 2.75 mm Clover Amour Hook:

Make a slipknot and leave a 3 in. [~7.5 cm] yarn tail, ch 70

Fasten off and leave another 3 in. [~7.5 cm] yarn tail.

CHERRY (make two):

In pink yarn and with a 2.75 mm Clover Amour Hook:

Round 1: make a magic circle and (sc) x6 [6]
Round 2: (inc) x6 [12]
Round 3: (sc, inc) x6 [18]

Place a Clover Stitch Marker in the current loop and set your hook aside.

Next, we will secure the stem to the cherry.

Step 1: Insert the crochet hook from the ws of the cherry to the rs, coming out of the center of rnd 1.
Step 2: Pull the yarn tail to the inside of the cherry.
Step 3: Secure the yarn tails from the cherry and from the stem into a knot.
*Tip: For extra security, I recommend using hot glue to prevent the knot from coming undone.

Continue onto the cherry.

Rounds 4-6 (3 rounds total): sc all around [18]

Round 7: (sc, dec) x6 [12]

Stuff.

Round 8: (dec) x6 [6]

Stuff one last time and use tweezers to get into the narrow opening.

Fasten off and leave a 6 in. [~15 cm] yarn tail for sewing the piece closed.

Weave through the flo and pull the hole closed.

Repeat this for the second cherry.

ASSEMBLY:

Magnetic clasp: Install the magnetic clasp at the opening of the bag. Use pliers to bend the metal hooks in place.
Cherry: Tie the Cherry stem into a bow around the handle side that was sewn onto the body of the bag.
