How To: DIY Braided Scarf!

Hi all, my name is Duana, from Duana Studio (@duana_m_chandler on IG)! I am excited to share a DIY braided scarf using 4 different fabrics. As the weather cools off, I love making scarfs. Decided to do a stylish braided one for my daughter with her FAVORITE colors. 🙂 This can also be made with chunky yarn, but to put to use some of the fabrics I have in my stash, I decided to use fabric for this specific project! It’s a great way to get utilize a few long scrap pieces you have left from an old project, or you can make a brand new one and gift it to someone for the holidays! You can make a green, white, and red one for Christmas, or a blue and gold one for New Years! Once you’ve brainstormed the colors you want to use, you can get started by using the tutorial below! 🙂

MATERIALS:

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Cut 4 pieces of fabric of equal length, approximately 1.5 to 2 times the desired length of your scarf. I cut mine 5 inches to give enough room for seam allowance. Fold in half lengthwise and stitch together with 1/2” seam allowance. I ended up stitching them together using Clover’s Wonder Clips to give it a cleaner finish, but you can also choose to have raw edges!

2. Line up your 4 pieces of fabric parallel to each other. Knot the ends of the fabric together.

3. Take the fabric on the far right and weave it over the next two pieces of fabric and under the leftmost strand (1 over, 2 under). Now, the former leftmost strand becomes the new rightmost strand.

4. Repeat this pattern, always weaving the far right strand over two and under one until you reach the end of your strands.

5. As you braid, periodically tighten the braid by pulling gently on each piece of fabric. Keep the tension consistent for a neater appearance. When you reach the desired length, secure the ends by tying a knot. You can even cut the ends to add some extra flare!
