Cozy Celtic Mug- Crochet Pattern

Hello! It’s Jennifer Ryan, the designer and blogger behind Celtic Knot Crochet. I am excited to be sharing the Celtic Mug Cozy project here on the Clover blog!

I love to combine Celtic Knots with crochet and with St. Patrick’s Day coming up, I thought this was the perfect project to make.  You’ll see that it is a very easy project that uses simple stitches and a small amount of yarn.

I decided to make 2 of the Celtic Knot embellishments for my cozy since I like being able to see the knot while I was holding the handle of my mug but you may want to just add one embellishment – you pick!

I’ll take you through each step of the project with several photos.  Let’s get started. ?

Skill Level: Easy

3 skeins Size 3 (DK weight) or a thin Size 4 yarn – Pick 2 colors that look great together and help to highlight each part of the knot and one more color that would frame the knot well (for the mug cozy base)

(I used Yarn Bee yarns in a mint green, lime green and lilac)

Measuring Tape (Clover)

Scissors

F/3.75mm crochet hook  (Clover)

2 buttons (5/8” diameter)

Jumbo Tapestry needle (Clover)

Knot Weaving Supplies:

Corkboard or foam core board (1/4” thick and about 5” square)

Print-out of Knot Diagram

Flower Pins by Clover

Finished Measurements:  Mug Cozy base = 10 ½” long x 3 ½” wide

Celtic Knot = 3 ¾” long x 2 ¾” wide

Mugs come in a wide variety of sizes so you’ll want to measure the circumference of your mug and then subtract one inch – this is the length you want for your cozy base

Gauge:  Gauge is not necessary for this project as long as you make the cords the length stated in the pattern

Abbreviations:

Ch (chain)

Sc (single crochet)

Sl st (slip stitch)

Dc (double crochet)

YO (yarn over)

Lp (loop)

Sp (space)

Hk (hook)

Sk  (skip)

Special Stitches:

Back bar of the Chain = When looking at the right side of a chain, you see many “V’s” and the chain looks like a braid. Turn the chain over and you see a series of bumps – it is in these bumps that you will work across the chain to produce a cord with even edges along both sides

Click here to watch a short video tutorial on my Youtube Channel about this technique

Back Loop Only = Insert hook into back loop of each stitch

Hdc2tog (half double crochet 2 together) = YO, insert hk into next st; YO, draw up a lp; YO, insert hk into next st; YO, draw up a lp; YO, pull through all 5 lps on hk

Notes:

First the cozy base is crocheted and the closure is attached

Next 2 cords are made and then these 2 cords are woven into the Celtic Knots

Lastly the knots are sewn to the base

The stitch pattern for the base (sc, 2 dc) creates a ‘shell’

Weaving Celtic Knot

1: Print out Celtic Knot Diagram and pin to corkboard

3:  Following the arrows lay cord along the green path on diagram pinning as you go and making sure to correctly pass either over or under the cord

4:  Pin all crossings and remove knot from corkboard (see photo collage above)

5: With tapestry needle and matching yarn sew cord ends together and all crossings making sure stitching does not show on Right Side

Finishing:

Lay cozy base flat on work surface and pin Celtic Knot pieces in place

Using yarn tails (of lighter color) and tapestry needle sew Celtic Knot embellishments to base along edging (sewing between top of cord stitches and bottom edge of sl st edging)
