Trick or Treat Bag Crochet Pattern

Hello! I’m Mary from MarysYarnBasket! Get the kids ready for trick or treating fun with this spooky ghost bag! This bag works up quickly and could be made in a variety of colors. You can also find the inexpensive pattern in a printable PDF version here. 

Abbreviations

(U.S. crochet terms)

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

dec – crochet two stitches together (decreasing)

inc – crochet two stitches into the same stitch (increasing)

() – stitches with-in parenthesis are worked into the same stitch

BLO – crochet into the back loops only

Materials

  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle
  • 10 mm safety eyes (two sets)
  • Worsted weight yarn:
    • Black
    • White

This finished product will measure approximately 9 inches tall and 8 inches wide.

Bag (black)

  1. ch 31
  2. Starting in the second ch from the hook, sc 30 across.
  3. Working down the other side of the ch, sc 30. You should now have 60 sc.

Place a stitch marker and start working in the round.

  1. inc, sc 28, inc, inc, sc 28, inc (64)
  2. BLO hdc around (64)
  3. Continue to hdc around until your bag is 8 inches tall. Feel free to remove the stitch marker. Once you reach 8 inches, stop at either side. You can lay the bag flat to be sure you are where the bag edge folds.

Now you will begin the row where the handle will be placed. Place your stitch marker again.

  1. hdc 10, ch 12, skip 12 hdc and then hdc 20, ch 12, skip 12 hdc and then hdc 10. (64) (counting both sets of your handle ch)
  2. hdc around, while placing a hdc into each of your handle ch. (64)
  3. hdc around (64) Fasten off and weave in the tails.

 

Ghost applique (white) (x2)

  1. ch 7
  2. starting in the second ch from the hook, sc 6 across, ch 1 and turn (6)
  3. inc, sc 4, inc, ch 1 and turn (8)
  4. sc across, ch 1 and turn (8)
  5. inc, sc 6, inc, ch 1 and turn (10)

6-15. sc across, ch 1 and turn (10)

  1. sc around the outside, going around the sides first, saving the bottom of the ghost for last. Once you reach the bottom

sc, (hdc, dc, hdc), sc, sl st, sc, (hdc, dc, hdc), sc, sl st, sc, (hdc, dc, hdc), sc. Fasten off and leave a tail for sewing.

 

Assembly: Place eyes on the ghost in-between rounds 4 and 5, approximately 3 st apart. Place safety eye backs on before attaching to the bag. Feel free to embroider the eyes or use felt if you wish. Next, using your yarn needle, attach the ghosts to the bag. I chose to make two ghosts for my bag, but you can make as few or as many ghosts as you like.
