Sunflower

Working in a round:
Round 1: Using brown yarn, make a magic circle or ch2. In the second ch from the hook make
12 dcs. Join with a ss.
Round 2: Ch 2, dc in the same stitch as ch2, then 2 dcs in each stitch around (24).
Round 3 (petals): Attach yellow yarn. All in the same stitch – *Ch 2, dc, ch2, sc in the second
ch from the hook, dc, ch2 and ss. Skip a stitch, and ss into the next stitch*. Repeat in between
the asterisks* all the way around. When finished you should have 12 petals. Tie off leaving a long
tail if you will be sewing the applique onto another project, or weave in your ends. I like to use
my tapestry needle to sew the first and last petal a little closer together for a seamless look.

Leaves

Using green yarn and the G hook, ch 6. Sc in the second chain from the hook, hdc in the next, dc
in the next 2 stitches, and 4dc in the next stitch. Continuing down the opposite side, dc in the
next 2 stitches, hdc in the next, sc in the next, ch2, sc in the second ch from the hook, then sc in
the next 5 stitches, going back up the side of the leaf, then ss and tie off leaving a long tail at the
top of the leaf. Repeat the process to make a second leaf.

If you would like, make a hat to desired size using your favorite hat pattern. I sew my leaves in
place first, then add the sunflower on top of it to give it a more natural look. You can also use the
sunflower appliques to make a headband, garland, coasters, magnets, etc. The possibilities are
endless!
