Joy, Love, Peace Christmas Wall Hanging

Hi! It’s me, Elisa from Strings and Cuddles! I’m here again to share with you my new pattern!

Christmas is just around the corner and I’m sure most of you have already started or even finished decorating your homes with all the beautiful Christmas decorations.

I started putting up our Christmas tree right after our Thanksgiving dinner after our guests left and while my little girl was napping. I finished decorating our home for the following 2 days and then off to making and wrapping gifts.

Anyways, I am here again to share my new festive crochet pattern. It is a wall hanging decoration and I am so happy with how it turned out. I’d say that this pattern is not your ordinary tapestry crochet where you usually use single or double crochet stitches. In this pattern, I used the Front Post and Back Post double crochet.

So, let’s get started!

Skill Level:

Intermediate

Materials Needed:

  • Amour Crochet Hook Size I | 5.5mm (or size to obtain gauge)
  • Mini Patchwork Scissors (Art. No 493/CW)
  • Tapestry Needle Set – Bent Tip (Art. No 3121)
  • Any Worsted Weight Yarn | I used Red Heart Yarns [White, Green, Red, Blue, Yellow]
  • 2 Dowels | 18 inches long
  • Optional: Ribbon or any string to be used as a hanger
  • Optional: Starch Spray for blocking

Finished Size:

12 inches (width) x 18 inches (height)

Gauge:

16 sts x 11 rows = 4 inches

Stitches and Abbreviations | US Terminology

  • Ch(s) – Chain(s)
  • SC – Single Crochet
  • Sl – Slip
  • St(s) – Stitch(es)
  • RS – Right Side
  • WS – Wrong Side
  • Rev SC – Reverse Single Crochet or Crab Stitch
  • FDC (Foundation Double Crochet) – Chain 3, yarn over, insert hook in 3rd chain from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), yarn over and draw through 1 loop. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through remaining 2 loops – 1 foundation double crochet just made. *Yarn over, insert hook under the 2 loops of the chain at the bottom of the stitch just made, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Yarn over and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through remaining 2 loops. Repeat from the *.
  • FPDC (Front Post Double Crochet) – Yarn over, insert hook front-to-back through the vertical post of the next st, yarn over again and pull through (there will be three loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook.
  • BPDC (Back Post Double Crochet) – Yarn over, insert hook back-to-front through the vertical post of the next st, yarn over again and pull through (there will be three loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook.

Notes:

  1. Read through the whole pattern before starting.
  2. Each row begins with chain 2 but this beginning or turning chains DO NOT count as a stitch.
  3. This pattern is worked from the bottom up, from right to left and turning each row (back and forth).
  4. This pattern is worked using FPDC or BPDC stitch except for the border which uses SC stitch. Odd Number Rows are worked with FPDC stitch while Even Number Rows are worked with BPDC stitch.
  5. Numbers in ( ) at end of each round indicate the number of stitches in that row.
  6. A chart is provided for your reference.
  7. With all the colors and numbers, I recommend using a highlighter to track your progress.
  8. When changing colors, you can just float the non-working yarn at the WS of your work and pick it up when you need it.

Border and Attaching the Dowels

After the last row, do not turn. Continue working on the side of the panel and with the RS facing you, ch 1, 2 SC in the side of the last row just made, *SC in the next side row, 2 SC in the next side row*. Repeat from* to * across – down to the very 1st row (1st corner).

Now take the 1st dowel and line it up on the bottom of the foundation row. Ch 1 and with the dowel on top of the working yarn, sl st around the dowel. SC in every st and around the dowel across (2nd corner).

Ch 1 and continue working on the side of the panel, 2 SC in the side of the 1st row, *SC in the next side row, 2 SC in the next side row*. Repeat from * to * across – up to the last row (3rd row).

Repeat the instructions on how to attach the dowel. Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Optional: Additional Red Trim / Edge

Starting from the left side bottom corner, attach Red yarn. Ch 1 and Rev SC (crab stitch) in every st across. Fasten off.

Do the same on the other side but start on the right top corner. Fasten off.

Weave in all ends. I recommend blocking your piece because it has the tendency to curl up on the sides. I actually used a starch spray.

Add a ribbon or any string of your choice to serve as a hanger and it’s all done! Enjoy your new Wall Hanging Décor!

I would love to see what you create, please use these hashtags #stringsandcuddles, #stringsandcuddlesdesigns, #lovejoyandpeacewallhanging to share.
